There are sometimes things that I can’t explain. These things stay in my memory and haunt me long after they occur. What makes it even worse is that these things often happen in the least likely places.
I remember one in particular when I was finishing up my shift at work. Back then I worked as a dishwasher part time while going to school. It was a difficult job at times, but I liked the predictability and shortness of it. In a way it helped me get my thoughts all gathered up.
So I was finishing up my shift at night. The chefs and waiters always left before I did, which gave me time all to myself. I usually hurried up and enjoyed the silence while it still lasted. After throwing away the garbage and turning off the lights, I went outside to my car. Only four cars remained in the back. Most people parked in the front, probably because it was more convenient. As I walked to my car and got inside, something odd made me look over my shoulder. It wasn’t a noise or glimpse of anything. It was just an unpleasant feeling that made me want to look. I thought nothing of it and turned on my car.
As I drove out to leave I noticed something in the corner of my eye. The car next to me appeared to be abandoned, except for a faceless thing that stared at me. I knew it was a person and not a car seat because the thing would sometimes twitch or shift in its seat. I quickly put my car in drive and began to leave, but not before I took one more glimpse at my rearview mirror.
It was still there. Looking at me. Staring at me. Even as I drove away its face still stared in my direction.
I know this isn’t the supernatural experience you may have expected, but believe me when I say this stood out in my mind for many months and years. The simple glance it gave me combined with the lack of understanding made me shiver once I got home. Never before had I seen something appear so sinister without even doing anything.
The next day I came prepared with a camera but found no sign of the car or the mysterious thing. I didn’t give up hope and waited a while longer before deciding that the thing would most likely not be coming back.
It’s a mystery I won’t likely figure out.
Unfortunately, someone else might.
