He opened the door to find her standing there, crying. Visible from the moonlight shining through the window, the tears that was rolling down her cheeks never stopped flowing, despite her hands that was constantly trying to wipe them away.
Penance struck him in the chest like a bullet.
He was too late.
He couldn't get her out of the room in time.
There, sprawled uncomfortably on the ground before her, lay a woman and a man, their faces shadowed in the dark room. He didn't need to move closer to see who they were—he knew. And he came to get the girl before it started, which he, in dissatisfaction, didn't manage.566Please respect copyright.PENANANW5Jcj8C30
This would scar her. She was just a little girl, after all—a 10-year-old girl, and it didn't matter if she was a strong girl, because she witnessed everything. She witnessed the murder. She witnessed their terrified cries. She witnessed their cold, trembling hands wrapping around her tightly, before their eyes rolled back and collapsed to the rough floor. She witnessed their own blood pooling out beneath their bodies, her feet. She witnessed her parents' deaths—everything. Everything she shouldn't have seen. Everything she should have avoided.566Please respect copyright.PENANAJwe4NR6n0x
Everything he should be hiding her from.
He promised them. He promised her parents to get her away, protect her. And he broke it.
The room was cold and silent, only her sobs could be heard, and the blow of the shuddering air outside whispering in the dead night.
He watched helplessly as her body shook uncontrollably, and she fell on her knees, over the pool of warm, red liquid. But she didn't seem to notice. She sobbed for them, her head bowed, muttering their names repeatedly, hoping for them to open their eyes, even if she knew it was a hopeless wish.
He wanted to drag her out of there, for her to not see their lifeless bodies, for her to not kneel over their bloods, for her to not stay in her parents' murdered place, for her to not cry. Because the sight pained him. It pained him so much he wanted to crumple.
But as he watched her broken state—her broken, broken state—he was glued to his spot, and his face a sorrow. He couldn't do anything. And comforting wouldn't help.566Please respect copyright.PENANAcbfA27OpMG
