As clocks and timepieces around the Capital City of Larel struck midnight, three assassins slipped silently into the palace grounds, undetected on quiet feet, making no more sound than the soft rain that misted them.
They darted through the gardens, ducking past trees and dodging bushes with inhuman speed and dexterity. Avoiding the many patrols of men that weaved through the massive estate that belonged to the royalty of Githal, they were hooded and armed to the teeth both visible and not. Soon damp grass became damp pavement and the assassins climbed effortlessly through the lowest window.
Once into the dark corridors of the palace, the three evaded patrolling guards with ease as they made their way to their target’s bedchamber, where she and her husband lay, unsuspecting in heavy slumber, dreaming of their deepest secrets which no one would have the chance to know after tonight.
If the assassins were normal citizens of the Githal Empire, they would have been concerned about how easy it was for them to break into the home of the Empress, but they were not normal, which was obvious given the job that they were on at the very moment.
The three shadows flickering on the smooth stone wall, in sync with the candles creating them, only gave the sentries, a few seconds before the assassins were upon them slaying them before they could scream a note of terror.
The lethal killers stepped over the dead without a second thought, giving no heed to the blood soaking their boots and cloaks as they examined the door in front of them. It was large and wooden, with polished golden hinges and ornate handle.
The main thing that confirmed they were in the right place, was the seal of the Empire which was engraved in the stone above the doorway, a leafless tree, the branches like crooked fingers and four roots twisted their way towards the top of the door frame only to stop a couple inches away from it. Each root represented one of the four countries that the Githal Empire was made up of, Cyndaria in the east, Alcamerie the south, Tasmarnel north, and the west holding Wendless.
The hired killers unsheathed their shining blades with tenderness meant for children before they silently stole into the room of Empress Amaryllis and her Prince Consort Henry.
No resistance met them, as they slit the throats of the two sleeping royals.
