Elanor had woken up early that day to try on the dress she had the royal seamstress make specifically for today. Her first day of courting. The thought of romance with a Lorde made her snort. Men’s hobbies and interests clashed with hers to the point where she didn’t get along with that many of them.

The princess had slipped the silk over her head and down her body and now stood staring at herself in the mirror. She frowned. She couldn’t help but feel confused at her own body. While all the other girls in Elior were tall and slender with sharp facial features and pointed ears. Elanor had none of that. The seamstress had tailored the dress to fit her short plump body, adding a gold silk belt to the creamy white of the dress. Gold and white made up most of her wardrobe, the only thing she was proud of. The gold dove. The role she plays in my family. The one of innocence. She was playing with her hair in the mirror when she heard footsteps coming down the hall that led to her room.

She knew it was childish as she did it. Running to the little closet in the corner of her room and latching herself in. She just needed a break. Just for a bit. Before the handmaidens came in and saw the mess that she was. She had hid just in time. The young princess heard her chamber door being swung open and the small pitter patter of footsteps that were her handmaidens.

“Princess? We’ve come to tend to your hair, your highness, where are you?” Her head maiden yhalla’s soft voice called out and through the crack in the closet doors Elanor watched her set her basket of hair care on the bed and walk to the window balcony to open the curtains. A wave of golden sunlight filling the room and making her Curly Auburn hair burn like fire in the rays. She watched as the woman looked for her around the giant room that was her sleeping chamber. She felt that Yhalla was much more beautiful than her. Dark brown skin with hair the color of the Phoenix trees in fathers garden and eyes so brown they were almost black, her elf ears poking out where she’d tucked a strand of hair while looking for her under the bed. She finally looked at the closet and with a huff she started for her. Shaking her head with a laugh.

“I don’t know why I always forget about the closet,” She bent down and knocked on it lightly.

“Ella dear, it’s time to get ready for the day…” she cooed, her voice soft and soothing. Elanor opened her mouth to respond, but couldn’t find the words.

“Yhalla, am I ugly?” The maids face twisted with confusion.

“Of course not Elanor. What in Prethia are you on about?” The princess could tell she wasn’t lying. While yes, princess Elanor’s features were strange and did not fit the beauty standards set for noble blooded elves. For some reason lots of people had found her traits attractive, in an odd different sort of way. But that didn’t stop her from envying her tall slender peers. Feeling stubborn Elanor stayed put.

“I don’t wanna,” She wrapped her arms around her knees and buried her head into her dress. She heard her other maids footsteps as they joined Yhalla by the door.

“Lady Elanor, you have a ceremony to attend. You can’t be late, you know how your father gets when you're tardy to royal functions,” Nalu, one of the second maids, reached for the closet handle and before she knew what She was doing it slammed shut. Nalu yelped and jumped back.

She had not moved her hands. The wind? Most likely? Yhalla had just opened the balcony door, sometimes the wind shut her bedroom door so hard you could hear it from the kitchens. She thought.
She guessed Yhalla, nalu and Fitza had assumed the same cuz none looked very surprised.

“Nalu, be a dear and go close that door will you?” Yhalla asked as she stood up and strode to the exit of Elanor’s room.

“I’ll be right back, Fitza, do your best to get the princess out and ready, ok?” With that she left the room.
