A Long Drive Home
The rest of the week flew by as I got settled into life in New Orleans. I was just out here living, hanging out with Angel, Kol, and sometimes partying with Kitty Kat like a proper vampire should. I have been on go since I got here to avoid the inevitable crash that would come if I let myself stop for too long and think of Tyler.
All of a sudden, my phone rang out of the blue. Looking at the caller I.D., it turned out to be one of my best friends.
"Hello? Bonnie??"
"Caroline?" She asked. "Oh my God, you don't understand how good it is to hear your voice."
"You're absolutely right, I miss you guys so much." Unexpected tears started streaming down my cheeks. I'm such a sap. "It was really hard not talking to you guys!"
"How are you?"
"Oh my god, I have so much to tell you!" I exclaimed. "I'm safe in a new city, I even applied to a university out here and I'm sure I'll get in. I made a few new friends including your cousin, Angelique."
I knew not to tell her about Katherine or Kol. I would keep that a secret for now.
"I'm happy for you," she said. Uh-oh, she sounded kind of hesitant.
"How are you? How's Elena and Stefan? Matt? Oh crap, I hope no one told the mayor that Tyler is... well, you know."
"Care, about Tyler..." she trailed off.
"What?" I asked. Stones pooled in my stomach."What's going on?"
"I have something to tell you and you're not gonna like it."
I know I said I was never going back to Mystic Falls and here I am, eating my words.
Elena completed her transition into a vampire, there had been a mass murder of the remaining council members, and Klaus is still alive.
And how the hell is he alive, you ask?
Oh you know, just Bonnie and Tyler making a deal with him that allowed Klaus to borrow his body.
Once again, Tyler made a decision without telling me! I mourned him like a complete idiot and he was alive THIS WHOLE TIME.
I guess I should thank all of them. His, and Klaus', supposed deaths pushed me to leave that small town girl behind to become Care Renée Michaels.
I was on my way back to Mystic Falls, but not before I got my new life in order. I went to the leasing and post offices to tell them to forward all of my mail to my mom's address until I tell them otherwise before hopping on the freeway.
I had a mother, two best friends, a boyfriend, and other important people to catch up with.
Oh, and can't forget that mass memorial for the council members.
The rest of this year was going to be a drag.
But on the bright side, I wasn't going to be in Mystic Falls for too long after that. Once I graduated from high school, I was definitely heading straight back to New Orleans to continue the life I started when I thought I lost two of the most important people in my life. The man I was in love with and the man who was responsible for my immortal bloodline...
"Hey Kol." I had called him on the drive home.
"What's up, darling?" He asked. "You never call me this early and I thought we were all meeting up later."
"About that..." I trailed off. "I'm headed back to Mystic Falls as we speak."
"What?! Why? Isn't the council still after you?"
"No, the council was murdered." Here comes the dreaded next part. "And I found out that Klaus is still alive."
"WHAT?"
"I know," I said. "Turns out he body-jumped into Tyler! Now, they're both back in their own bodies like nothing ever happened."
"Well, that explains it then."
"Yeah, well I wanted you to hear it from me. Since we're friends now and all."
"Thank you, Care."
"You're welcome. Tell the girls for me," I said.
"When you say girls... you mean Katherine too?"
"Might as well, since she finessed her way into our little group. So, why not."
I could hear him chuckle through the phone.
"She was drunk off her ass last night if you can believe it."
I laughed. "I can definitely believe it!"
"She slept over," he said. "Quite frankly, I'm surprised Elijah let her stay over instead of dragging her back to his place."
"Good Lord, Kitty Kat. You and Elijah??" I asked. "As in Elijah Mikaelson??"
"Yeahhh." I could hear her giggle from far away. Katherine Pierce? Giggling? "We've been off and on over the years, hopefully that changes soon."
"Damn you're in deep," I said with a laugh choosing not to think about her and the strict original in compromising positions.
"I'll let you guys know when I get back to Virginia. Don't party too hard without me!"
I hung up with the press of a button.
Well, that call was over.
Seeing a sign, I saw that I was just getting to Atlanta. This drive was going to take extra long.
What a drag.
