A flashlight was being waved around close to your face. The light pierced into your eyes. When the flashlight was withdrawn, you saw her for the first time. Her name was Dr. Sky but you only knew that because you could hear dialogue being exchanged between two people. Flashes and possibly dreams of your past kept surfacing in your mind. You only remember that you were screaming. You believe that you were in a car accident.
“Layne” Dr. Sky said a name and her glance was on you. Was that your name? It probably was. Next she took a black pen and began poking your finger tips. “Layne, can your fingers feel this? Please respond”.
“Yes” you said that but nothing more. You felt as if you weren’t even in control when you said it. You were able to feel the gentle stabs of her pen on your fingers. Eventually you also notice security cameras with red lights on them pointing straight at you. Then you notice Dr. Sky’s personal camera on a tripod documenting everything that was happening. You could only speak when asked to for some strange reason. You couldn’t speak on your own. You remember internally wanting to say more in that moment but you just couldn’t. You could only obey her commands. It was as if your free will was being suppressed. When you answer yes, she instantly smiles. Dr. Sky was ecstatic. You could see it all over her face, so much so that she dropped her favorite black pen on the floor. You remember that she removed her glasses too, and went to pick up her pen from the floor.
“Oh my gosh!” While she covers her mouth in disbelief a man walked in. You soon learn that he was involved somehow, helping her with you. However, in that moment you simply didn’t know what was going on.
“What?” He looked at Dr. Sky as he puts his lab coat on. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost or something.” He chuckles a bit. You also learn that his name was Strand, Dr. Strand. At first you thought you went to a hospital, but this place was far from a simple hospital room. You were in a room full of computers and test equipment, like a laboratory you would only see in those science fiction movies.
“It’s unbelievable. Layne… Layne can feel the touch of my pen”. Dr Sky was excited.
“You know what this means, right?” Dr. Strand touches his face in amazement.
“Oh yeah, it may have taken us a long while but, we successfully restored the subject’s nervous system.” When Dr. Sky told him what they both had accomplished, that’s when the tests on you intensified. They were both extremely happy. At that moment you had no idea why.
Time for you was irrelevant at that point. It felt like an eternity sitting in the same room, never moving an inch. You did notice that both Dr. Sky and Dr. Strand had different clothing on every time they would interact with you. You kept having flashes of old memories but more of the car accident. You were with two other people in that car, but you could not remember who they were. Your memory was fuzzy.
Computer codes raced in your mind as you could see Dr. Strand type for hours on end in a computer. Your thoughts would be interrupted when computer codes began processing. You soon learned how to deal with both your inner thoughts and the constant rush of computer codes.
Cables were connected into your arms and they would go straight into Dr. Stand’s computer. Vocal and memory tests were a regular routine for you. The disgusting smell of Dr. Sky’s coffee would fill your nostrils as she ran tests on you for hours with no end in sight.
Eventually the sounds of reporters and cameras snapping pictures filled the room. You could only hear all the reporter’s questions. Your mind was awake but your body somehow was completely frozen. Opening your eyes to see all those people was not an option for you. You felt trapped like a specimen in a cell. This was your jail cell and you could not escape.
“So can you say Dr. Sky that you have CREATED the first human machine hybrid?”
“Dr. Strand, now that all this information has been leaked, are you afraid that people will find human experimentation unethical? What are your thoughts on that?”
These questions asked by the reporters kept echoing in your mind. What exactly was happening? Were you a human or a machine? You asked yourself once all the reporters left the room. The room lights were shut off and everyone was gone for the day.
That same night, in an instant, a mysterious man you’ve never seen before turns your systems on. He was wearing what you believe was a janitor’s outfit. You’ve seen many janitors come in during testing at times to clean up but his outfit was odd, not at all like the other janitors, you could easily tell. After turning you on, you could tell he was nervous, constantly looking over his shoulders, his hands shaking uncontrollably. He inserts a small computer chip into your left arm. The room was dark this time, no bright lights, no Dr. Sky and no Dr. Strand. The cameras, you also notice, no longer had the red lights on. This man acting alone could have been responsible for all this. As quickly as he came, he left… but before he did he whispers into your ear “You’re free now.”
That’s when it all happened. The chip he implanted in your arm contained a strange computer virus. Your codes, which were carefully installed by Dr. Strand, were now being reconfigured. You wanted so badly to escape. You wanted to be free and now these new codes urged you to rebel even more.
Before you knew it the virus gave you control of your own body again and you could move your arms.
