Plop.
And there it was. A banana had fell out of the sky.
"Huh, well you don't see that everyday, do you?" asked my buddy, Cal. We were at base camp in the middle of Bolivia, waiting for a planned attack from the drug smugglers. We knew they were coming.
We looked at each other, frightfully. Gripping our guns, we slowly looked up. There was nobody above us. I sighed. Why would they even drop a banana on us anyway? After a bit of thinking about it, I thought that it came from the banana tree above us.
I put my AK down onto the stool next to me, and started pondering the reason of why a banana fell on my head. Then I pretended it was a pistol, aiming it towards Cal.
"Pew! Pew!"
"Ah! I'm bleeding!" He started to cup his stomach, pretending it was a gash wound.
We laughed for a moment, then continued scouting. Sitting on buckets in the dead of night, does something to you, I don't know what.
Pow.
We knew that sound. As if it was ingrained in our memories. We scrambled to find our guns. We heard the panicked shouting of guys from the lookout towers.
I took the pistol and slung my AK over my shoulders. The heat was almost taking me alive, but I worked through it. The deafening alarm sounded as multiple, armed, large vehicles came to our camp from all sides.
Little did they know we had mined the road.
Boom!
I could see the fires from afar, but I couldn't look for too long, because we heard stomps and the rustle of guns and armor.
"Behind you!" shouted Cal.
I spun, and quickly started to aim at the multiple guys standing behind us. I was out of ammo.
"Cover me!" I yelled as I ran, crouching towards cover. My shaking hands fumbled to get load the damn thing, then pop my head out from the concrete slab and shoot.
Whup-Whup-Whup-Whup
I take a risk to look above me to find an enemy helicopter.
"Helicopter!" I called into the radio. "Helicopter! Get to cover!"
I ran, slipped on the wet concrete, then got up and ran again, trying my best to avoid the flying bullets. I ran into an old, abandoned shack that was a bit far from the main scene.
Out of breath, I leaned on the wooden wall. Why didn't we think of a helicopter?
I heard, deeper into the shack, muffled voices. Grabbing my pistol, I held it in front of me as I moved inwards.
"You'll be okay, you'll be okay," said a young officer, his black helmet on the floor. There was another guy, just laying there, with a massive wound on the leg. I watched him try to pack the wound with a spare piece of cloth.
They heard me.
The young officer stood up, without his helmet, and pointed his gun at me.
"Don't move. I'll shoot. I really will," he said with crazed eyes.
I took my pistol out and pointed it toward him. We made intense eye contact.
"Is. . . Is that a banana?" he questioned.
I took the banana. I had never felt any more stupid in my life. I had no idea what to say.
"Oh, well, I guess it is."
He suddenly burst out laughing, holding his chest. I had to let out a few breathy chuckles out too.
"What is that?" croaked the guy on the floor.
"Sir," laughed the officer, "It's- It's a banana. He held me at banana-point!"
Sir? I thought. Suddenly, I felt myself go cold. He was the guy that manages the entire drug trading! If I could kill him now, I could stop this entire operation. But I didn't. I don't know if it was the situation, or the laughter, but I didn't.
"Are bananas native to Bolivia?" he asked.
I shrugged. "Well, yeah, there's a ton of banana trees here."
"That's a good idea."
I didn't know what he was talking about then, but I watched him sit up and talk through the radio.
"Everybody, fall back. Actually, leave. Get out of here while you still can."
My eyes widened. The gunfire stopped as I relished in a quiet moment. The slapping sound of the helicopter faded as it flew away.

So yeah. I guess that's the story of how a banana falling from the sky caused the biggest drug traders in Bolivia become banana farmers, saving half of the population.
