A large meteor hit their planet in the year 2024. This event, known as the Sky-Rain, was followed by panic and a mass epidemic of a genetically engineered strain of influenza from an unknown origin.
During that time, scientists raced to save the human race. They experimented on volunteers, attempting to genetically modifying them to be immune to the virus. They succeeded, just barely, and thus mankind scraped by.
A small group of scientists secretly used this unique opportunity to experiment on a group of isolated subjects, creating individuals with the power to read minds, control matter, and hover in the air. These genetically modified humans were known as Controllers.
They inevitably escaped, and lived out their lives among the general population. Posing as normal humans, their existence stayed hidden except to a select few. Over time, different variations of Controllers emerged in the environment. One type could read minds, but lost the ability to hover in mid-air. They were known as the Minddrinkers.
Later, another variation of Controllers who could hover in mid-air, but lost the ability to mind read, emerged. They were known as Fleyers, and as soon as they appeared, a rivalry was struck between the different factions of the Minddrinkers, Fleyers, and the original Controllers. After a brutal battle, the three newly formed factions of powered humans stayed away from one another, but as time passed, more and more of these people emerged out of the general population. Old disputes restarted. People young and old argued about things they'd never experienced. Soon, the Minddrinkers, Fleyers, and Controllers were at war once more.
