THE MOON LIT THE WAY of the street as footsteps and panting could be heard. A young blonde boy, noticeably short, checked his watch with a worried look as he clutched his books tighter under his arm.
"I'm getting late 'cause of cram school class.." He panted, then turned to a rusted gate. "Sure enough, the shortcut is this way.. I get a bad feeling about this, though." Nonetheless, he slowly climbed over the gate. Judging the background, it was the gate to a cemetery.
"Hey, why're you in such a hurry?" A voice asked. "Eh?" The blonde turned in the voice's direction, eyeing a boy sitting atop a hill on a gravestone as the wind set his rather long hair afloat. Beside him, sitting on the ground was a boy— no, a girl with (h/c) hair wearing a bonnet, staring into the dark night sky.
"What's with them..?" The blonde thought to himself. "What are they doing alone in such a place at this hour..?" He jumped off of the gate onto his feet, his face twitching. "C-Could it be ghosts?" He was about to quietly leave when he was interrupted.
"Wait a moment," The brown haired boy said in a light voice. The blonde stared in fear as the brunette lowered his head. "Please wait," The girl requested in a low voice, and the blonde immediately mistook her for a boy. "There's such a wonderful view of the stars tonight. Don't waste the opportunity. Come and join all of us," The brunette continued, his eyes closed. "Let's watch the stars together with everyone."
The blonde seemed to calm down a bit now, taking a step forward towards the two. "Why would you even watch the stars? Besides, there's only the three of us here. Why would you say, 'everyone'?" He asked.
The brunette boy stood up as did the girl. Shadows had crossed both their faces. "Yeah.. Everyone..." The brunette said with a smile. "Everyone in this graveyard." Glowing ghosts that looked like people were now visible across the graveyard, the brunette boy had his arms around two grinning ghosts, and the girl was offering a soft smile to the spirits. The blonde's eyes widened with fear.
"Don't be so startled! They're all our friends, right?" The brunette turned to the (h/c) haired girl, who nodded with a cheerful smile in contrast with his. "They're just bums who can't rest in peace and got stuck here," The brunette went on. "We keep them company," The (h/c) haired girl added. Both of them glanced at the blonde. "Huh? What's the matter?" The brunette asked. "Is something wrong?" The (h/c) haired girl asked. The blonde's eyes were wide as saucers. "GYAAAA!" He screamed, and ran off.
The brunette turned to the girl, who laughed nervously. He put his hands in his pockets and turned to the white-haired ghost leaning against the tree he was standing next to. The ghost had attire that a samurai might wear, his white hair tied in a high pony tail as he stared downward at the ground with ice-blue eyes. The two young tweens stared at the man quietly.
-
"I'm telling you, I saw them! The ghosts in the graveyard!" The blonde said as the school bell rang slowly. "There's no such thing as ghosts," A brown-haired student muttered. "You're studying too hard, you might just be tired," Another one added. "You know, like... Dead tired." 236Please respect copyright.PENANAgc6YiUo5xX
"What...!" The blonde screeched. Just then, the teacher walked in. "Quiet, Oyamada. The class is starting, so take your seats." The laughing students quieted down and took their seats. "So, to begin with..." The teacher's voice trailed off in the blonde's hearing as he spaced out. "So what was it that I saw yesterday? Could it have been a dream?" He thought.
"This is Asakura Yoh and Asakura (Y/n)," The teacher introduced the brunette boy and (h/c) haired girl. "They came here from Izumo due to family circumstances." (Y/n)'s (e/c) eyes curiously scanned the room. She put on a smile, waving cheerfully. The students waved back, "Cute!"
The blonde's jaw practically dropped to the ground at the sight of Yoh. "What's with that face, Oyamada?" The teacher asked. The blonde pointed at the two. "It's them! These are the two boys who were there with the ghosts!" He glanced back at his classmates as Yoh's facial expression softened further. "There's no such thing as ghosts," He said calmly, (Y/n) nodding silently. "Besides, who are you?" Yoh asked.
The blonde was leaning over his desk. "What?!"
-
"Damn it! I can't get any study done at this rate.. I'm gonna reveal their true identities!" The blonde thought, following the two Asakuras down the street. It was strange that they didn't do so much as to even glance at each other. (Y/n) was staring ahead with a relaxed expression as Yoh whistled. Eventually both of them stood at a bridge, Yoh motioning to stop there. The blonde watched them from behind a pole as the two siblings stared into the sky. "(Y/n), huh? That's a nice name..." He thought.
Seconds of staring into the sky turned into minutes, and the minutes turned into hours, and now the sun was setting and the two Asakuras were still staring off into nothingness. The blonde clenched his fists in frustration. "How long are you two going to zone out standing there?!" He thought.
Yoh finally spoke. "Ah, being one with nature is such a great feeling, right, (Y/n)?" He asked, closing his eyes. "I guess it is, Ni-san," (Y/n) replied with a small smile. "What the heck?!" The blonde yelled, jaw dropping down again. "Huh?" Yoh turned to him.
-
"That wasn't really very nice of you," Yoh laughed. "You're not mad?" The blonde asked. He turned to (Y/n). "You neither?"
"Why would we be mad? We pretended to not know you, so you came along, right?" "I knew!" The blonde replied frustratedly. (Y/n) scratched her head, ruffling her smooth (h/c) hair. "It would be really bothersome if someone knew our secret at school," She mumbled in a voice that almost matched Yoh's. "Yeah, we don't wanna make a fuss around ourselves," Yoh added. "Your secret?" The blonde questioned.
They both nodded. "Truth is, we're both Shamans and we came here for training," Yoh said.
"Sha-Shaman?"
"A Shaman is someone who links this world to the other world," Yoh stood up from his sitting position. "You can reach out to me whenever you're in trouble."
"Me too, do not forget," (Y/n) added with a soft grin. "We'll be there for you. Ni-san might not look it, but he's very reliable when he settles on a decision." "Mhm!" Yoh hummed cheerfully. "By the way, do you know anything about Amidamaru?" He asked.
"Of course! He's from the most famous legend in this city!" The blonde supplied. "His relics are displayed in the local museum."
"I see.. Thank you," Yoh gave a close-eyed smile and walked away. (Y/n) turned around to the blonde and waved, before tailing after the brunette Asakura.
-
"I dunno anymore," The blonde thought tiredly. "So what were those two guys after all? Shamans? Those who link this world to the next? What the heck is that.." He suddenly jumped in his seat upon coming on the right page in his dictionary. "Wait, it's in the dictionary?!!" He jumped in his seat. "What in the.. 'Shamans.. People who put themselves into trance-like states.. They directly interact with such beings as spirits, souls and ghosts. Shamans borrow their power in order to treat various diseases and for political purposes. They use their spiritual abilities to summon such beings to our world and convey the worlds of the dead. They were the core of human society in ancient times, and exist all over the world to this day..'" He read. Then the blonde closed the thick dictionary.
"Smells fishy," He frowned.
-
Yoh and (Y/n) approached the brittle, fragile-looking sword behind the glass display. Yoh had his hands in his pockets as (Y/n) crossed her arms. "What is it that you're mourning about?" Yoh asked the raven haired spirit sitting atop the glass, hands clasped together as he stared downward with a sad expression.
(Y/n) felt a rush of emotions hit her, it was like a gust of wind, just the same as when she entered the room with anyone or any living being in it, except, this spirit's emotions were much stronger. She pursed her lips in a thin line at the sight of the heavy aura of grief and guilt that laced this spirit who couldn't let go. Yoh observed her from the corner of his eye, then fixed his attention back on the male spirit. "I... I killed one of my dearest friends... And abandoned my other one," The spirit responded in a low voice.
Yoh stared up at him with a soft expression. "I see. And who are you?" The spirit's head shot up. "I am the swordsmith, Mosuke! Better to ask, who are you two? Aren't you startled to see me?" He asked loudly. Yoh smiled. "Well, it's a bit complicated.." "Talking about the friend you killed and the one you abandoned.. Would you like to tell us about it?" (Y/n) asked. "You beat me to the punch again, (Y/n)," Yoh laughed softly, then turned back to Mosuke, who was simply wide-eyed.
-
"Heck, Shaman or not, I don't care at all. What easygoing jerk. At least that (Y/n) studies good, but that Yoh doesn't study enough and only listens to his favorite music, spacing out staring at stars, staring at the river," The short blonde boy said frustratedly to himself, his legs crossed over his seat at the train station. The train arrived, pulling over with a few screeching noises. He stood up, clutching his books. "Honestly, I wanna be like him," He said to himself as the doors opened. "Stars, huh.. I wonder if they'll be at that place today, too.."
-
"Hahaha! That's a pretty nice spot you found here!" A tall man laughed. Judging from their attire and atmosphere, they were a gang. "After all, nobody comes here. It's near a convenience store, and nobody will complain even if we're loud." "We can do whatever we want." "But you know, I heard there's some kids coming here lately." "Wait, seriously? If Ryuu-san heard about that..."
A tall man with raven hair and a... long pompadour kicked down a gravestone. "So there's some brat breaking into our Best Place without my permission?" He murmured. "Apparently, those guys... Want to know the terror of Ryuu of the Wooden Sword as I beat the crap out of them."
The gang members stood up. "R-Ryuu-san, so you came..." "Yeah, just a moment ago." "W-Well, Ryuu-san..." "What is it, Ball Boy?" "Th-That gravestone is.. The burial mound of Amidamaru, you see.."
Ryuu's pompadour bounced. "Huh? Amidamaru? Who's that bastard?" "What do you mean..? He was an extremely skilled Samurai feared by everyone.. And got executed for killing many people 600 years ago.. We could get cursed just by stamping on that.." "So what?" "Eh?"
Ryuu suddenly threw his wooden sword down on the gravestone, splitting it in two as the gang stared with wide eyes and dropped jaws. "He destroyed the gravestone!!"
"Curse? Burial mound? What a fake! If ghosts are there as you say, then they should come at me! If they're so frustrated!"
"What are those guys..." The small blonde boy thought to himself from his hiding place behind a gravestone. "They're just ghosts, after all!" Ryuu shouted. The blonde started to crawl away quietly. Suddenly, an empty tin can was nudged forward by his arm by accident and made quite a loud noise. Loud enough to catch their attention, anyway.
Ryuu walked towards the sound. "Hah? What are you doing there?"
"N-No, I was just.." "I see. You're one of those dumb kids!" Ryuu grinned in a threatening manner. The blonde made a teary face. "That's not me, though.."
-
"Hahaha! What is that, Manta! Look at your face!" The students from before laughed. Manta had a cast over his head and arm, with a black eye to boot. He frowned. (Y/n) stopped walking from outside the classroom to listen in, so did Yoh. "We told you not to go to that graveyard," One of them went on. "What the hell happened to you?" The other one asked. "First all that ghost stuff from the other day..." "And now this?"
(Y/n) began walking again, faster than before, dragging Yoh with her. "Ah—Ghosts do exist," Yoh said quickly.
"The transfer students.." "I asked the graveyard guys what happened," Yoh said, voice now in its normal, laid-back tone. (Y/n) caught sight of Manta's injuries and frowned. "What do you mean by that? Can't you just leave me alone?" Manta asked. "Manta was your name, right?" Yoh asked. "Huh?"
In a few moments, Yoh was dragging Manta down the school hallway as (Y/n) tailed behind, telling him to go less roughly every now and then. "Let's go settle our scores, Manta," Yoh said determinedly. "Wait a minute!" Manta yelled. "Who said I needed your help? I don't deserve to be saved by you two, anyway!"
Yoh kept dragging Manta on, not even glancing back at him. "We're friends, so me and (Y/n) will help you," Yoh said calmly. "Hah?" "We are friends, right?— Or at the least acquaintances?" (Y/n) asked. "Our grandpa always told us," Yoh explained, "That there are no bad guys among those who can see ghosts. You saw the ghosts, so I told you out secret."
He grinned cheerfully. "We're friends now, okay?" "Not okay! Not okay at all! Who would because friends with a slacker like you! Even you know how terrifying those guys are! Ryuu of the Wooden Sword is dangerous! It's crazily stupid to stand up to him!"
"It's naught before (Y/n)'s fist," Yoh joked, earning a dense and questioning look from the said (h/c) haired girl.
"(Y/n)-kun can't win! Not with his size and build! Not (Y/n)-kun either!" Manta yelled.
"Did he assume my gender?" (Y/n) thought questioningly, but let Manta assume that she was a boy.
Yoh suppressed the urge to laugh at the ridiculously disturbed look on (Y/n)'s face and stopped walking. "Yeah, I'm pretty weak."
"Then all the more!" Manta replied. "—But we'll work it out!" Yoh added, turning around. "It's okay—because we have a strong ally on our side."
-
"What was that, punk?!" (A/n: If you get the meme reference, I respect you very much.)
Manta was practically sobbing at this point as Yoh crossed his arms and (Y/n)'s face formed a slight frown. "I said, get out of here," Yoh said calmly. "You are disturbing the spirits," (Y/n) muttered, (e/c) eyes staring intently. "You wanna get beaten to death and get sent to that world already?!" Ryuu threatened. Yoh frowned seriously. "I mean, the guys from that world say that you're a nuisance to them."
The gang burst out laughing. (Y/n) stared curiously. "Baka! Ryuu-san isn't scared of ghosts at all!" One of the gang members yelled.
Ryuu played around with a strand of his hair. "Yeah. If you can beat me..." "Then do it, you say?" Yoh asked, but he wasn't speaking to Ryuu. "Why not? Who will you help? Yoh? —Okay, then," (Y/n) said, not speaking to Ryuu either.
The gang tilted their heads. "Huh?"
"There's one guy who wants to fight so much that he can't hold himself any longer," Yoh said with a slight smirk. "Isn't that right?— Amidamaru!"
The white haired spirit was now visible behind Yoh, his arms crossed and a stern look on his face. Manta stared in shock and fear. "A samurai's ghost!"
"Thank you for granting me the opportunity to dispel the shame brought upon me. I am grateful to you, Yoh-dono, (Y/n)-dono," Amidamaru grasped his sword fiercely.
"Could this spirit be the owner of that destroyed gravestone? Amidamaru! The legendary samurai!" Manta gasped as (Y/n) gazed up at the white-haired samurai.
"Oi, oi, oi... Again with all the Amidamaru bullshit?" Ryuu grumbled.
"Crap! He's a ghost, after all—!" Manta started to back away slightly.
"Kill these guys!" Ryuu yelled, and two of his gang members started going for Yoh.
"(Y/n), can you handle yourself without any help?" Yoh asked. (Y/n) grinned. "They're kind of slow. I can deal with them, but please be careful, Ni-san," She said, getting into a stance.
"Mhm.. Well then, let's show them, Amidamaru," Yoh said, and Amidamaru nodded. Yoh lifted his hand as (Y/n) deepened her stance into the ground, narrowing her (e/c) eyes. "If we join our skills together... We can become invincible!" Yoh clenched his hand a little, and Amidamaru split into flames, forming together again as a little ball in Yoh's palm. "Amidamaru! Spirit Ball Mode!"
Manta stared in shock. "Just as I told you. One of the ones who link this world to the next. That is a Shaman," Yoh grinned. The two gang members launched at him, and (Y/n)'s eyes were now like daggers in concentration. "Let's go! Hyoui Gattai!" Yoh thrust his fist onto his chest, fiery glows surrounding him.
Manta gasped. "That soul ball merged with his body!"
(Y/n) took a deep breath as she saw the look in Yoh's eyes change. Swiftly and speedily, she kicked one of the members into the air, leaving the other one to be thrown into the air by Yoh, who smirked with a proud look in his face. The two gang members fell into the river below the little bridge Yoh was standing on, (Y/n) exhaling sharply as she got behind the other gang members. "Move, and I'll be more than happy to take all of you on," She spoke. They froze. Both Yoh and (Y/n)'s movements were quick and sharp. "Hy-Hyoui? He said Hyoui?! That would mean..." Manta whipped out his dictionary. "A state of being possessed by a spirit.. Don't tell me, linking this world to the next world means.."
Yoh stood up from his stance. "That is enough for the likes of you," Yoh pointed the wooden sword at the gang. "Now, it's your turn, bastards. Are you prepared?"
Ryuu stared, sweating nervously. "What's with this guy? He's like a totally different person... I barely saw the shorter boy move, but.."
Yoh took another stance, smirking again. "What's the matter? With your ridiculous swordplay, in front of a real, life taking sword, you must be trembling with the feeling of dread, are you not? You kid!"
Ryuu twitched. "Don't mess with me with your stupid samurai play!" He ran in Yoh's direction, Yoh darting for him also, his own wooden sword in hand.
"Now, I understand it all..." Manta thought, "—Linking this world to the next is none other than the state of making the spirit posses his own body, getting all the dynamic techniques of the spirit, and everything else reproduced into our world!"
Yoh swiftly dodged Ryuu's blade, shifting past it, and shoving the sword in front of his face. "Fear not, I will not kill you— I cannot be bothered with making you one of the same kind as me."
The absurdly long pompadour was cut off half way, Ryuu falling to the ground. "Ryuu-san!" The gang members cried out. The members glanced from Yoh to (Y/n), and with one glare from Yoh, they picked up Ryuu. "Gyah! Run!"
"I finally understand why he was always so spaced out.. Spacing out means emptying out his thoughts and heart. And as it becomes empty, one becomes able to carry a spirit's power in it. That is the link between the two worlds. Shaman.." Manta thought.
Amidamaru left Yoh, and the usual, somewhat carefree expression on his face returned. "(Y/n), did you get hurt?" Yoh asked, immediately turning to (Y/n), who finally loosened up from her stance and was rubbing her wrist. She shook her head. "I did the block and trip wrong. I was rushed, but that's all. I rushed it.." She muttered. Yoh made a mini-sigh. "Amidamaru was amazing, do you think so as well, Ni-san?" (Y/n) asked, changing the subject awkwardly. "Yeah, he is," Yoh replied with a soft smile. "Thank you for praising my skills, Yoh-dono, (Y/n)-dono. I am grateful to you both," Amidamaru said politely. Yoh smiled up at Amidamaru, who smiled back.
-
"There are many powerful souls in this world that have left a lot of memories and can't afford to die yet," Yoh explained, as the hundreds and perhaps thousands of souls flew across the sky in soft, blue-green glows. "I want to make these guys my allies in order to become the Shaman King." "Shaman King..?" Manta repeated.
"That's been Ni-san's dream for years," (Y/n) said quietly, a small, contented smile on her face. "I believe that the world could be a better place with Ni-san as the Shaman King. People would be put at ease just as he is." "Oh—Stop it, you," Yoh laughed, scratching the back of his head. "—But he's also a ridiculous slacker and always wants the easy life," (Y/n) added. "Oh, well, it's only the truth," Yoh shrugged.
After a few quiet moments, Yoh turned to Amidamaru, who was sitting by the tree as he always was. "By the way, would you like to become comrades, Amidamaru?" Yoh asked. "Me? Your comrade?" Amidamaru questioned. Yoh gave a close-eyed smile. "Your swordsmanship was amazing and when we fused together, it felt kind of warm."
Amidamaru looked down for a second. "I refuse," He said flatly. Yoh seemed a little taken aback. "I have been waiting here for 600 years and I will not stop," Amidamaru finished.
"For Mosuke and that other friend of yours?" (Y/n) asked. "Right?" Yoh added.
"How did you know?" Amidamaru questioned. "I heard everything from Mosuke. That you three were best friends since you were kids," Yoh said.
The white-haired samurai stared with wide, blue eyes. (Y/n) could feel the strong, faithful emotions surrounding the spirit with loyalty. He was insanely patient, from what she knew, waiting there for 600 years.
Amidamaru told his story, how he had been ordered to kill Mosuke, but instead had him escape and told his spirit friend, Kotone, to run away, how they had made a promise to meet again one day. Mosuke promised to give Amidamaru the finest version of his katana, Harusame, before they parted, and Kotone promised to give him some of her finest medicines and that she would monitor him from afar. They were still waiting for each other, even through the test of time.
Amidamaru was unsettled when (Y/n) murmured that Kotone went into a windy, haunting rage and massacred all the people who had to do with Amidamaru's death. However, it was revealed to be a rumor and Kotone only left unsettling messages about them.
"And then you became a legend," Yoh spoke quietly. "You were called a demon who killed a thousand people in a terrific battle style."
"Without Harusame, I eventually drained myself of my strength..." Amidamaru's voice trailed off. "So I came here with (Y/n) to give it to you," Yoh said softly, walking over and handing Amidamaru a katana with red and gold over its handle. The sheath of the katana was black, with rope over it here and there.
"Is this... Harusame?!" "Mosuke told me he wouldn't be able to rest in peace before giving it to you," Yoh smiled slightly. "He possessed the sword and waited all the time.. It turns out, Kotone was a friend of (Y/n)'s. They met when (Y/n) was only 4 years old, I heard."
Amidamaru seemed a little cheered at the last part as he stared up at Yoh. "I told Mosuke that you kept waiting for 600 years, and (Y/n) told Kotone, too," Yoh grinned.
*
"That can't be true... That stupid fool... He really waited that long... Kotone, too..." Mosuke sniffled. "You three are equally stupid, then. Now, let's go see Amidamaru," Yoh said. "Ah, what the hell are you saying?! How can I look him in the face after that?! Harusame is battered, and I can't even touch it, being the ghost I am..." "You can," Yoh corrected. "Huh?" "I will lend you my body. Because I'm a Shaman," Yoh put a palm over Mosuke, turning him into a little soul orb just as he did to Amidamaru. "What is this?!" Mosuke shouted. "Let's go! Hyoui Gattai!" Yoh thrust his fist onto his chest again, fusing with the soul.
*
"And that's how we remade Harusame together. (Y/n) paid a visit to Kotone, she says she'd like to see you sometime soon and stayed to wait."
"I am beyond grateful for what you did for me, Mosuke and Kotone, Yoh-dono and (Y/n)-dono," Amidamaru lifted his hand and took the sword. "'Feelings' are what is important.." Yoh said. 236Please respect copyright.PENANAfqNdYWWTnu
The white haired spirit unsheathed the sword and pointed it to the sky, admiring the blade. "No doubt, no one could forge such a sword other than Mosuke himself.." "He left a message for you, too. 'Sorry to have kept you waiting'."
"I see.." "And what happened to Mosuke?" Manta asked. "He said that he couldn't show his face and went ahead to the other world," Yoh laughed softly. Amidamaru sheathed the katana. "What a fool he is. After making me wait for 600 years... Makes me want to chase him and beat the hell out of him even now. It appears it's still not the time to go to the other world yet, though."
"Eh?" "I shall accompany you, Yoh-dono," Amidamaru said. Yoh gave a bright, close-eyed smile. 236Please respect copyright.PENANAl1tbs6dZO9

A young boy, seemingly around (Y/n)'s age, watched the scene unfold from where he sat on the railing of a building. The spirit behind him wore golden-lined armor with blue and red, with his arms crossed. "That guy has a rather nice Spirit Ally," He smirked, golden eyes reflecting the moonlight in contrast to his raven hair. "Don't you think so, Bason?"
-
(Y/n) felt a shiver run up and down her spine, but it wasn't exactly the feeling she got when there was immediate danger. It was like an enemy was there watching her, yet wasn't exactly an enemy at the same time. It confused her, but she shook it off quickly.
