It was late in the day, and the dogs had come out of nowhere, and now they had the family of cats backed against a large oak. The young brown tabby tom cowered with his sister behind his parents. His father, a brown tabby with a white chest, swiped his clawed paw at the closest dog. The dogs' barking and growling only continued, and this time louder.
"Mud! Twig! Climb the tree!" His mother, a scrawny brown tabby with white paws, said quickly. She let out a hiss at the smallest of the dogs, which had stepped closer to the cats. Mud's sister, Twig, wasted no time climbing the tree. Mud, however, stayed behind his mother. "I'm not going to leave you!" He said.
Mud's mother, Scrap, use to be a housecat. Her housefolk had taken her claws from her when she was just a kit. Luckily, Scrap had escaped to the outside world... but she had no claws to defend herself, or what she desperately needed-- which was to climb trees.
Scrap turned to look at her son. Her green eyes, ones that looked identical to his, were filled with fear. "Mud, I need you to climb the tree." She said. Mud just shook his head. He looked to his father, who was spitting at the dogs. His ears were laid back so flat against his head he looked like he didn't have any.
"Patch, I can distract them, go up the tree!" Scrap said, backing further against the tree as the dogs started to close in on them. "Please tell me you're not saying what I think you're saying..!" Patch, the tom-cat, said- practically pleading.
"Please climb the tree."
For a second it was silent, the dogs had stopped barking, but only because the largest one lunged. Everything happened at once. Mud climbed the tree as fast as he could, losing a claw in the process, he heard his mother's yowl be cut short, and he felt his father behind him.
Mud scrambled onto the branch and turned to see his father coming up the tree. One of the dogs jumped up to lean against the tree and grabbed Patch's tail. The fear in his father's eyes made Mud freeze. He couldn't think. Everything went quiet. He faintly heard his sister screaming.
He was only brought back to earth when his sister swiped at his ear with her paw. "Mud!" She cried, her voice breaking. Mud looked at Twig and said nothing. He looked down and what he saw made him almost fall off the branch. He dug his claws into the bark. Below them were the dogs, all next to each other, chewing something. The stench of blood filled the air, making him feel sick. He could see the blood-stained grass and clumps of fur everywhere.
"I....I...I.." Mud shook his head vigorously. "No, no, no, no no no no! This can't be happening. W..we have to go save them.. Twig we have to help.." His voice cut out and he started breathing heavily.
"Mud.. we can't, we can't go down there it's too late. They're..... They're....They..." Twig couldn't finish her sentence. Mud just looked at her. He felt so angry at himself. If only he had stayed.. he could have helped them fight off the dogs. He shook his head again, as if trying to shake out the thoughts. He would have died in the process too. His mother knew what would happen that's why she wanted him to go up in the tree.
The pair sat silently in the tree for what seemed like days, until the sun set and the dogs finally decided to leave. Even after the dogs had disappeared, they waited for a while until it was dark to leave their spots on the tree branch. They climbed down the opposite side of the tree, not wanting to see what was on the other side of it.
Without a word the two walked until they couldn't feel their paw pads. They couldn't go back to the den, that's where the dogs had originally found them before they were chased to the tree. Mud and Twig laid down to rest under a holly bush, one where they felt protected by the sharp and pokey leaves. Him and his sister curled up next to each other. That night neither of the two slept, but laid their silently, rethinking the day. Thinking of what they could have done better. What could have made it not go wrong.
It was just before sunrise when Mud decided he couldn't lay down anymore. He crawled out from under the bush, followed by Twig. Mud looked at the sky, it was a filled with so many stars. "Do you remember when dad.." He had to take a breath. "When dad told us the stories about the clans?"
Twig nodded. Mud knew she was fond of them. "He said they were like a big family that protected each other. And each cat had their own tasks and duties to carry out. There were warriors who protected everyone and trained their tails off to protect everyone." Mud said.
"Yes, I know this. What are you saying?" Twig asked, looking at him.
Mud took a deep breath. "Let's start a clan."
Twig looked at him like he was crazy. "You want to start a clan? After what.. what just happened?"
Mud nodded and said "We could train cats and ourselves and we could learn how to protect everyone. No one would be alone and we'd all be safe."
Twig didn't say anything but looked back up at the sky. "Dad always wanted to go back to his old clan. He didn't say it but the way he would talk about it and this look in his eyes.. even if they exiled him... we could be better. We could accept everyone. No one would have to be alone."
Mud looked up at the sky and saw two shooting stars, one after the other. Two stars added two new members of Starclan. His father and mother had taught them about Starclan. It was where cats went after they died. Their souls would travel there to watch over the lives of who they loved. He knew that even though they wouldn't be with him physically, they'd be there in spirit to guide him. That was all he could say to himself to keep from breaking apart.
