I woke up to strings of text messages from my phone. I looked at them and the last one made my heart freeze.
Come to base today - Lorenzo
I began to think, if he found out about my scheme, it was over for me.

It was afternoon and I told Mrs. Smith that I would be going home.
“Be careful dear.” I smiled warmly at her.
I walked out the gates of the mansion and into a dark alley to make sure no one was following me. My leg still hurt very badly but I decided to bear the pain.
A few months ago, I decided to abandon my mask. Lorenzo wasn’t too happy about it but I told him that I would be able to still keep my secret hidden.
I stepped out of the alley with my a black blazer and my hair packed up into a ponytail.
As I continued walking, a black car suddenly approached me. The windows rolled down to reveal a well beaten up Alex.
Get in was all he said before speeding off.
We arrived at the mansion. Alex and I stepped out of the car and I couldn’t help but notice some bruises on his face and his arm.
I wanted to ask but judging by his cold and emotionless facial expression, it was not the right time.
We walked through the halls in silence to Lorenzo’s office where he was seated furiously waiting for me.
“I see you’re here.” he said monotonously.
Alex pushed me forward. Lorenzo stood up and walked towards me.
“So, your time is up, it was a long time ago and I believe you know that.” he began.
I just stood there staring at him with a blank expression.
“You know what happens when I don’t get what I want on time.” he circled around me like he had just found his prey.
“I said I will have it.” I said firmly.
“Well miele, I have run out of patience.” I stared at him wanting to rip off his skin.
“You know what will happen to that pretty little family you have.”
“You wouldn’t dare.” I said sternly even though I was shaking inside.
He chuckled darkly
“Oh but I would, you see after that stunt you pulled last week, I don’t think I can let you off the hook anymore.” he gestured to Alex.
“Escort her off the building.” he turned his attention back to me.
“You have till tonight to say your final goodbyes.” I snarled then left, Alex trailing behind.
“Alex, what’s wrong with you.” he said coldly and kept walking.
“What is wrong with you, are you okay?” I tapped his arm
He pulled me into a corner and whispered.
“I know what you did yesterday and you're lucky that Lorenzo doesn't know about it or you will be dead by now.”
I stared at him in shock.
“We have to get your family somewhere safe until we can take care of Lorenzo and I am coming with you home.”
I nodded.
“We also have to tell your mom.”
“What, I can’t do that.”
“You can and you will.”
“What about their lives? I can't tell mom that I'm dealing with the mafia.” He returned back to his stone expression and pulled me outside.
“Let’s go.” I stared at him in disbelief

We arrived at my house about 30 minutes after because Alex had to make sure noone was following us.
He rang the doorbell and waited.
“Hi hon what are you doing here and who is this.” she looked skeptically at Alex then at me.
“I’ll explain inside.”
I told mom everything about how I started working for Lorenzo and how he threatened to hurt us but mom just stared at us with a straight face.
“I was wondering when you would tell me.” I looked at her confused.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, I did know about you working with Lorenzo for a while now, I was skeptical about it first but then I confirmed it some months ago. I always wondered why you came home late and those bruises on your face sometimes. I’m not stupid.”
“Wha- how” I stuttered
“Well, your dad used to gamble with mafia men before then years before I had you I got associated with it as well. I wasn’t some Mafia Donna but I was kinda part of them. I stopped when I got pregnant with you and told your dad that I didn’t want my child growing up with this around her. Your dad did listen for a while but after he went back to gambling. He became a drunkard and you know the rest.”
“But if you knew about Lorenzo, why didn’t you do anything to stop him.”
“I had to act like I didn’t know anything about it and now, I’m guessing you’re here to tell me to pack up.”
I nodded.
“So, you’re gonna run away from problems and since when did that start.”
“Mom, there is no time. He said midnight.”
“Really?” she turned to Alex
“You, what part do you play in this?” he stared at her and replied.
“Nothing, I am with Hannah.”
“I see. Anyways Julie is upstairs but no one is leaving because I have a plan and you both are going to help me.”
Alex and I stared at each other then stared back at mom.
This is going to be a long night.
