School ended early on Wednesday so everyone rushed home happily. I was one of them except I was less happy. Things weren't going the way I wanted it to. I knew not everything had to go my way but at least something had to be right.
I stared at my feet as I walked home. There was this bridge over a pond across from where I was walking. The pond was partially frozen over, anyone that placed a foot on it would break the ice. It was then I looked up. I didn't know why I looked up then but I did, and of all people I saw Katherine. It wasn't a bad thing at all though. She stood on the bridge, her body close to the edge, looking at the pond water. I stood frozen in place for about a minute. Katherine leaned towards the edge slightly, but that was about it. Other than that, she stood completely still.
I found myself walking over to her, something I thought I'd never do. My mouth opened as well, to say her name. She didn't look up and for a second, I thought it wasn't her. But then I said her name again and she lifted her head up. The words out of her mouth were not what I expected.
"Go away,"
I stopped walking. This was when I thought that it couldn't be her. Katherine wouldn't have told me to go away like that. But then again, I didn't really know her, not in the way I wanted to or should.
She stayed put, this time she looked at the sky. I thought about turning around and leaving but if she hadn't said anything I might have left.
"I don't like the cold all too much," she said.
I noticed her voice sounded different, I didn't know how to describe it. Now, I hate that voice, I don't like it at all. I wish there were things I could have done not to hear that voice, but in the end, wishes don't matter.
Katherine shifted her weight, so that she was resting on the edge of the bridge.
"Me too," I said quietly.
There was silence. I didn't like silence between Katherine and I. Everytime we were quiet, she had to leave. I didn't want her to leave. I took a single step forward.
"Katherine?" I said, "Don't go. I still want to talk to you,"
Katherine didn't reply, but she slowly lowered her head. I couldn't see her face but I knew something wasn't right. So I made my way towards her until I was right next to her. She didn't move an inch and she didn't say a word. But she didn't leave, which was all I needed. I slowly place my hand on her back. We didn't say anything, but neither of us moved.
