Later that evening, William sat on the edge of his bed, staring at his phone. He had to admit, he was still trying to process what had happened earlier. Luke had asked him to catch up, but there was something in his voice, something in the way he looked at William, that made it feel like more than just casual. He wasn’t sure if he should’ve said something different or if he’d overthought it, but it was too late now.
After a few minutes of agonizing over it, William finally picked up his phone. His fingers hovered over the keyboard as he stared at the blank text message to Luke. Should he just keep it simple? Or should he say more? He wasn't sure what to say, so he kept it short and straight to the point.
"Hey, I’m down for dinner whenever you are. Just let me know when and where."
He stared at the message for a few seconds before hitting send. Immediately, a wave of anxiety washed over him. What if he sounded too eager? What if Luke didn’t really mean it? What if he was just being polite? His mind raced as he tossed the phone on the bed beside him and lay back, staring up at the ceiling, trying to calm down.
His phone buzzed a few moments later. William grabbed it instantly, practically holding his breath as he read the message from Luke.
"Sounds good. How about 7? I know a place. I’ll text you the details later."
William’s heart skipped a beat. 7 PM. That was in a couple of hours. He quickly typed a response.
"Perfect. See you then."
After he hit send, he put his phone down, staring at the ceiling again. His mind was spinning, but now there was something else—something warmer, lighter. Maybe it was just dinner, but in his gut, William knew it wasn’t just that. Not anymore.
He couldn’t stop thinking about the way Luke smiled, the way he looked at him like there was more to say. He hadn’t been able to read Luke like he used to, not since everything changed between them. But tonight, maybe, just maybe, he’d find out.
