ROBERT HEINLEIN was my favorite author growing up. He is called the "Dean of Science Fiction writers." (Probably because his life proves that if you keep at something long enough, you will succeed. And succeed he did.)
What was his secret?
He wrote about 4 pages a day. Everyday. Including weekends. He made a habit of writing. But that was his goal. No, make that his quota. About 1,000 words a day. All the live-long day. No excuses. No B.S. Do your four pages, even if it means staying up all night to get the job done.
Get this . . . all he had was a typewriter. Tap-tap-tap. (Someone is working on a typewriter simulator, so the keypad makes the sound of a typewriter.)
Typewriters are cool.
Heinlein was a private man. While Isaac Asimov would send fans a postcards -- thousands -- up to 20 per day, Heinlein would send his fans a form letter.
Why?
I believe he wanted to "make his nut," as they say in the world of taxi-drivers. He wanted to get his four pages in.
Some say he was mean, because he said, if you want to be a writer -- you have to write. Period. Full stop.
Is that being mean? IDK.
So many want to write. So many try. So many stare at a blank page for hours/days/weeks/months.
But there is an open secret to writing. It just stares us in the face.
It's like that Chinese expression about a journey of 10,000 miles/kilometers.
It begins with a single step.
Then another . . .
Then another . . .
For writers, it starts with a single word . . .
Then another . . .
Then another . . .
But don't follow in my footsteps . . . blaze your own trail.
Tip: Learn about your own "style." Everybody writer has a certain style, whether they know it or not. Keep lists of words, expressions, favorite paragraphs, etc. Your style will emerge.
The adventure continues here.
Have a great night/day/morning . . .
