Chapter 23. On board the Eridanus.
"Read the charges and specifications," said Captain Sorin Simme. He sat behind a long and wide black desk raised above the level of the rest of the room. Egon and CPO Modine stood before him.
"This never would have happened under Captain Jem," said CPO Modine in a whisper to Egon.
"Quiet!" said Captain Simme. "This session is being recorded."
"This special courtmartial is being convened under the authority of StarFleet regulation 1F1C4 for subversion, treason, and known or suspected unauthorized disclosure of classified information or material," said Subcommander Mauve in a flat voice.
"Charge 1 is subversion: failure to follow interplanetary protocols when directed to land by Neden Flight Control at Nu Neden Terminal Port.
Charge 2 is disregard of flight operational rules.
Charge 3 is careless and reckless endangerment of other crewmembers.
Charge 4 is undertaking actions leading to the destruction of at least two starfighters."
"How do you plead," asked Captain Simme.
"This is crazy," said Egon.
"Any plea other than not guilty, is considered guilty by this court."
"Don't we get a defense representative?"
"Yes, in normal circumstances. Not in time of war."
"War? What war?"
"The Anemonedians joined the Capricorni Alliance and declared war based on your attack of their escorts."
"They were about to attack us," said Egon.
"Don't waste your breath," said Modine.
"Besides, we were unarmed."
"Why didn't you contact the ship?"
"You know our communications were jammed."
"So anytime you can't contact the ship, you start an interplanetary war?"
"Permission to speak . . ."
"Yes, Subcom Sanas? Do you wish to add to the record on behalf of the prosecution?"
"Actually, on behalf of defense."
"Defense? This is an open and shut case."
"Then why bother with a trial?"
"Permission to speak is granted."
"Thank you, your honor. I was aboard the shuttle when these alleged events occurred. Everything went as normal. There seemed to be an explosion, but that was perhaps due to an inadvertent event which occurred in mid-flight. It had nothing to do with us. If anything, due to the excellent piloting skills of these two, I and the rest of my crew members are alive. For that we owe them a debt of gratitude."592Please respect copyright.PENANAuwMvUcW8nK
"Thank you, Subcom Sanas. I will take that under advisement. What are the penalties for these charges, Subcom Mauve?"592Please respect copyright.PENANAYDkEKZIXJ8
"Due the serious nature of the offenses, which occurred during a conflict, the penalty is oblivion."592Please respect copyright.PENANAoFwcKcAwec
"Oblivion? Gone without a trace, as if you never existed," said Captain Simme as he tapped his fingers on the black bench. "That's what happens when you don't play by the rules. The universe moves on and forgets about you. Well, I have heard enough. Anything you want to say before I pass judgement?"
CPO Modine looked toward Egon and shook his head.
"Is that a no? For the record, CPO Modine has nothing to add. And you?"
Egon felt the room starting to spin. His knees felt weak and his mouth felt dry. He tried to say something but no words would form. He took a step back and passed out. 592Please respect copyright.PENANApWXAJcm6iO
