"Right," I answered.
There was silence, I didn't know what to say.
"So, Wren," Jack said, I looked up at him "Where are we going?"
"Well, I'm walking back home..." I said.
"Okay," he said.
"But, what about Daniel and Leo?"
"Pfff, they'll survive," said Jack.
"I hope so," I said. Jack, smiled.
"So do you play any instrument?" he said.
"What is it with you and music?" I said, when would he ever just let it go?
He just shrugged. "Well I'm home now," I said and bought the keys out from my pocket and unlocked the door.
I stepped inside, and looked at the building behind Jack, why am I so awkward?
"Can I come in?" said Jack.
"Wha- yeah, of course, come in," I said, still thinking of Daniel and Leo back at his house. He stepped inside looking around the hall.
"My Mum is out at a meeting," I said, my attempt of explaining that no one else was here.
"Right, will I take my shoes off?" he said, I couldn't help but raise my eyebrows. "Sure, if you want to you don't have to..." I trailed off.
He quickly slipped off his shoes "do you want to go inside or stand around in this hallway all day?" he gestured to the kitchen.
"Wha- yea sorry," I felt my face heat up, I took a step over to the kitchen when I remembered I hadn't taken my shoes off, biting my lip anxiously I quickly slipped them off and went over into the kitchen, and then turned the lights on. Jack went over to the counter and leant against it looking around the room. "Do you want any water, tea?" I asked looking at the unwashed dishes from this mornings breakfast.
"No thanks, hey you have a piano," he said walking over to the piano in the living room.
'Yea," I said not too sure what to say.
"I can't play but I know a couple of little tunes," he said, "I think..." he trailed off and played a couple of notes "This one is my favourite though," he said and played a little melody of the piano. It was cute, the tune.
"My brother taught me that one before he left home," he said.
"Cool," I said, "what song is that?"
"Oh, I'm not sure I've forgotten," he said, "Do you play?"
"A small bit, I just know I few tunes," I said.
"Could you play something?" he said.
"Maybe, yea..." I said, getting nervous.
"You don't have to," he said.
"It's ok I can," I sat down on the stool my fingers hovering above the keys, I decided to play my least impressive song, Fur Elise.
My fingers were shaking and skipped a few notes and played some too fast.
"You're really good at playing the piano," Jack said afterwards.
"Not really and I can only play a few tunes..." I said.
"You are good, could you play another song?" he asked.
"Well...uh sure...What tune will I play?" Then suddenly I stood up "Y'know what this is just getting way too awkward, can we do something else, and Daniel and Leo will be waiting for you," I said.
"Do you really want just to be left alone?" Jack asked.
"Yes," I said, lies lies.
"Well, I'll be going then," he said.
"Ok," we walked over to the door and I opened it, "See you then," I said, sad.
"Ok," he said and walked away.
I closed the door after him, went into the kitchen and sat on top of the counter.
"Stupid life," I mumbled and opened up a cupboard, I saw a packet of chocolate chip cookies and grabbed them. I ripped open the packet and them proceeded to eat its entire contents. And then sat there until Mum came home (an hour and a half)
"Hey, Wren!" Mum shouted as she came through the door.
"Yea," I mumbled, I don't think she heard me but she saw me sitting on the counter.
"What is it?" I said.
"Your teacher Miss something said that she wanted to talk to me about your grades..." she said standing by the entrance of the kitchen.
"What about them?" I said yea I definitely had no idea what on earth she was talking to me about...
"That your grades were low and that your homework never gets handed in, Wren, you need to get good grades in school so you can get a job later on in life," She said, "I'm trusting you to do your homework and listen in class while I'm busy at work and if you break that trust I'll have to pull you out of school and you can get a job," she said.
"Mum! I am trying, it's just so boring, and you can't pull me out of school!" I said.
"Well then you better do your homework, I doubt you've done it yet?" she said.
I didn't say anything only went upstairs with my school bag. Then, I sat on my bed and pulled out my Maths book and copy, I couldn't get pulled out of school, I just couldn't and get a job?? Yuch.
So started on my Maths homework and actually got a surprising amount done, I joking guys if that happened it would be a miracle, seriously I got 3 questions done...Yea.....I'm great...
"Wren! Dinner time!" I heard my Mum yell.
"Coming," I lept off my bed accidentally pushing my school books on to the floor (but who cares?) and ran down the stairs.
I sat down at the table and stuffed my food into my mouth, "Hey Mum, so I was wondering if I could go back to piano lessons again?" I said, and stopped eating looking at her, she frowned. "Piano lessons are expensive and we are already struggling with money, I think you know the answer Wren.," she said.
"Sorry," I mumbled and we ate the rest of dinner in silence.
