Hello, I am Rin, and I have been writing novels for about five years. I love all types of writing and am extremely defending and passionate about poetry. I am probably the least qualified person to give professional tips on writing but I will do my best.
1. Keep on at it.
I know many people get started on a novel all hyped for views and likes, but their expectations do not fit reality. They don't see much action on their works and they lose hope. I cannot tell you how many novels I have started, got about ten thousand words in, and gave up on. Let's just say it's probably more than the age of anyone reading this. If you continue to progress as a writer and keep at a single work, I promise that you will be glad you did. Not only does it provide you with excellent writing skills, but it also helps responsibility and time management. My number one tip is "do not give up."
2. Set goals.
Goals are an important part of writing as they allow steady but repetitious writing. The more you get into a rhythm, the less likely you are to quit. I would suggest making a word count goal every week and making sure you follow through with it. This will allow you to feel more accomplished at the end of the week. Doing this you are less likely to give up.
3. Write about what you love.
There is nothing more heartbreaking for me than to see a young, talented writer write about a topic that is not in their interest. I can tell when people are writing about topics that do not interest them. They tend to be more jaded and neutral and do not give the readers what they want. They also aren't having as much fun and would be more likely to quit. I would steer clear from topics that do not bring enjoyment to you.
4. Use a thesaurus.
There is nothing more aggravating to a reader than using small little baby words and only forming small little sentences. (I will get more into this) I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. People. Who. Basically. Do. This. It makes the story seem dull and uninteresting. I would suggest for every one thousand words you write, go through the text, and change twenty-five mediocre words into higher diction. I guarantee the readers will enjoy this more. Also, learn how to spell. If you try your hardest but can't seem to get harder words correct. Get Grammarly. It is simple to install and it is also a lifesaver.
5. Write as many smooth/long sentences as possible. 570Please respect copyright.PENANAm6pC2nftdX
I can guarantee that your novel will be less interesting if you constantly use simple sentences. Go ahead and mix it up a bit, no one is stopping you. I usually use as many compound-complex sentences as possible, as they are the longest and usually the smoothest sentences you can write. A reader doesn't like blocky text that makes them read little. Short. Sentences.
6. Use grammar and proper format.
Apart from using periods, capital letters, and commas. There are some very important formatting that must be done to dialogue for readers to understand what is going on within a scene. For example if a person (Chad) was talking to, let's say (Mary), you would want to know that Chad is talking to Mary. (obviously) It would be harder to understand this: 570Please respect copyright.PENANAXdC4Of4b3e
"Thank you for the support on my last video" Chad looked at Mary and smiled "No problem!" Mary winced at him. "It was a bit cringe wasn't it." Chad laughed. "A little but it definitely got me thinking"
Than this:
"Thank you for the support on my last video!"
Chad looked at Mary and smiled, "No problem!" Mary winced at him, "It was a bit cringe wasn't it"
Chad laughed, "A little but it definitely got me thinking."
It is easier to read the second one because the formatting is what you are used to. Proper formatting in pretty much anything for dialogue is as follows: New lines equal changes in who's talking. I guarantee that every person reading this, one time in their lives, wondered why books spaced dialogue, or more so, how they did it. Well, now you know :)
I hope these tips helped you! I'm not here to win a contest, I just saw this on the home page and realized that this was a contest just now. I was here to help those who need help and correct those who need correction. I hope this thoroughly helped anyone who needed it! :)
