Jack
No conozco a Kaimi desde hace mucho. Creo que hace más o menos dos meses. Sí. Porque la conocí la semana que empezaron las clases. Me mudé a este pueblo el año pasado, antes de terminar el curso. Por eso estoy repitiendo. Desde el primer día tuve claro que la secundaria no sería fácil. Y no solo por los estudios. Con lo pequeño que es todo aquí, los niños se conocen prácticamente desde los tres años, y crecen en su mayoría como semillas en una piña, todos juntitos. Entonces, ¿dónde cabe ahí un chaval recién mudado al árbol?
Por suerte para mí, mi madre es muy sociable y no tardó en buscarme posibles amigos entre la vecindad. ¿Lo malo? Que esos tíos sean mayores que tú o mucho más pequeños. Pero al menos son buena gente y ahora tengo una bonita red de contactos que me cubren si me escabullo para comprar algo sin que ella sepa que estoy fuera.
El caso. Cuando se supone que debí terminar mi tercer año de secundaria, mi padre falleció repentinamente. Sucedió cuando planeábamos pasar las vacaciones de verano en este pueblo, con mis abuelos. Él había decidido pasarse antes para acomodar la casa. Todo muy normal, bien. Hasta que ese fin de semana desaparece por la tarde. Ni mi madre logra contactarlo ni ningún vecino lo ha visto. Nada. Casi como si se hubiera esfumado. Y al día siguiente, encuentran su cuerpo sin vida en la puerta trasera de la casa, tirado como un periódico cualquiera. Su rostro no estaba desfigurado ni su cuerpo destripado o descuartizado. Tan solo lo habían estrangulado con un alambre. Simple. Fácil.
Consecuencia: mis abuelos horrorizados. Como si el Diablo les hubiera arrancado de cuajo lo poco que les quedaba de esperanza, él murió de un infarto nada más enterarse de la trágica noticia, y ella entró en trance, como si se hubiera trasladado a su país de las maravillas. Mi madre, sin embargo, me trajo aquí, a la misma residencia donde vieron por última vez a mi padre y hallaron su cadáver. Irónico. Lo normal sería haberse mudado lo más lejos posible. Seguramente influya que mi madre sea policía, y que se especialice en investigación criminal. No es que diga que esté obsesionada con encontrar al asesino, haya perdido el respeto de algunos de sus compañeros y descuide la educación y alimentación de su hijo como prioridad… O tal vez sí. Tal vez.
Quizá a mí también me hayan robado un pedacito de felicidad y a cambio me hayan dejado arraigado un trauma. Una pesadilla que no me deja solo nunca. Que día tras día me deja más vacío que ayer, con solo un esqueleto carnoso andante, sin pensamientos ni creencias ni ilusiones… Nada por lo que vivir.
Pero no hay que rendirse al caer. Te limpias las lágrimas, sonríes, y te levantas. Eso aprendí cuando conocí a Kaimi. Es la mejor. Fue y es el rayo de energía que necesitaba. Sin ella no sería nada. Es esencial en mi vida. Puede que Selena también, pero me prometí estar siempre al lado de Kai. Allá donde ella vaya, iría yo. Detrás, a no mucha distancia. Me convertiría en su sombra, le gustara o no. Porque no todo trata de uno mismo, hay que pensar en los demás también. ¿Qué hay de mi felicidad?
Veo que Kai sujeta a su hermano por los hombros y lo empuja apresuradamente para cruzar el paso de cebra. Estoy por llamarla: se ha ido sin despedirse. Pero delante de mí un muro me lo impide.
El chico sordo de esta mañana, Red, está ahí parado. También se fija en cómo mi amiga huye rápida con su hermano. La observamos desaparecer al doblar una esquina, y él se da la vuelta para ir por otro camino. Ni se ha fijado en mí.
No sé qué hacer. Por una parte ha estado bien que Kaimi le haya dicho que tampoco se acerque a nosotros, pero por otra, Red me parecía interesante. ¿Podría ser otra luz?
—¡Red! —exclamo. Me he dado cuenta de que lleva audífonos, así que algo percibirá. Además de que he acompañado mi grito con un golpe contra el piso.
Ni se para ni se inmuta.
Hago ademán de ir tras él.
—¿Qué haces?
Selena me agarra del brazo.
—Quiero preguntarle qué pasó entre él y Kai.
—Es obvio que él hizo algo mal y en lugar de aceptar la reprimenda, se fue corriendo. Y encima se metió con su hermano.
—Él dijo que no era eso.
—Un niño asustado miente fácilmente.
—Conoces a Michael tanto como yo. Es el hermano de Kai, no se acobarda así como así.
Selena frunce los labios.
—Ya viste como de enfadada estaba, esto es serio, Jack. ¿A quién piensas creer?
—Si ni siquiera has escuchado su versión. —Miro de soslayo hacia donde la figura de Red se empequeñece cada vez más.
Por un segundo pienso que no lo alcanzaré, pero va como una gacela en territorio de leones. Que se note que le importa un bledo todo.
—¿Desconfías de Kaimi?
Me quedo callado.
—Es tu amiga. Siempre te ha apoyado.
—Y se lo agradezco, Sel. Igual que a ti. ¿En serio no tienes curiosidad?
—La tengo. Pero Kaimi nos advirtió antes, y después de ver esto, no quiero tener nada que ver.
—Allá tú.
Con desdén, veo que frunce el ceño y me dirige una mirada no muy encantadora. Aunque como enseguida he desviado la cabeza hacia Red, la he privado de empezar a reñirme.
Sé que desde el principio nunca le he calado bien. Es decir, ella venía en el pack con Kaimi, tampoco tuve muchas opciones. Estoy seguro de que nunca las habría tenido de todos modos.
—¡Red, espera!

Me doy la vuelta y continúo.
Él llega hasta mí y me detiene apoyando su mano en mi hombro.
—Me llamo Jack.
Otra presentación prescindible.
—Y yo Heracles Abberline —afirmo con mi mano izquierda.
—¿Podemos hablar?
—Prefiero que cantes.

Durante unos segundos reflexiona. Cuando termina, frunce el ceño y me agarra con ambas manos por el cuello de la sudadera.

—Eso no ha tenido gracia. ¿Podrías tomarte esto en serio?
Esto ya lo he visto antes.
No hace nada en los siguientes tres segundos hasta que me suelta y se aleja unos pasos de mí.
—Vamos a la plaza.
¿Qué plaza?
—¿Tienes algo importante que hacer esta tarde?
Sí, planear un asesinato.
—Porque quiero que me cuentes todo lo que pasó el sábado entre tú y Kaimi.
—¿No ha quedado claro?
—¿Insinúas que Kaimi se lo ha inventado todo?
—Jill es una pequeña zorra, y sus excusas son trucos sucios.
—Es mentira. Ella es quien dice la verdad.
—¿Entonces por qué estás aquí?
Silencio para nada incómodo.
¡Ja! Está bien dudar de vez en cuando. Incluso cuando es de alguien de confianza. Es más, esas son las mejores.
—Tengo una condición. —Jack levanta la cabeza. Sus ojos desprenden desesperación. Como una jirafita perdida—. Cómprame comida.
