Una madre
Son las tres y veinte de la tarde. El instituto termina a las en punto. Atravieso descalza el pasillo; me veo muy delgada en el espejo del recibidor. Llego a la puerta principal y salgo para revisar el correo.
El buzón está vacío.
Qué lástima.
Lo observo durante un rato. «Un poco más de pintura blanca en las grietas y sobre el horrendo Fish, y unas bonitas letras azules formando un gran Dankworth», recuerdo que dije.
Pero aún da pena.
—No pasa nada, más adelante se harán las reformas necesarias —me miento al tiempo que vuelvo adentro.
Troto hasta la cocina, me sirvo una ración de sopa y me siento a la mesa. Ella todavía no ha llegado, pero que le den; sabe perfectamente a qué hora se come.
Me llevo una cucharada caliente a la boca y al intentar coger otra, le doy un codazo a la copa que me había llenado con zumo.
Se cae al suelo enseguida. El impacto la ha roto.
Chasqueo la lengua.
Justo cuando me agacho para recoger los pedazos grandes, la puerta principal se abre.
Me asomo por encima de la mesa.
Sí, es ella.
—¡Hola, mi amor! ¿Qué tal el día? —exclamo con alegría; alcanzo los trozos de vidrio con más agilidad.
Como de costumbre, ella le resta importancia al tema con una mirada impertérrita y no me contesta.
Esta hija de su madre.
—He cocinado sopa. Tiene pescado. ¿Te gusta?
Le sonrío.
Su tersa piel blanca, su denso pelo azabache… Todo en ella es hermoso. Menos los ojos azul intenso que tanto desprecio me muestran.
—¿N-no te gusta? —articulo fingiendo aprensión.
Su chaquetón oscuro y largo me impide ver donde se encuentran sus manos.
Suena algo parecido a una palmada. Ahora mis ojos se dirigen a la derecha. Me pregunto por qué; si hace unos segundos estaban centrados en… Ah. Así que ha sido eso. Me ha dado una bofetada.
A toda prisa me echo a llorar.
—Perdóname, lo siento, no ha sido a propósito. ¿Qué es lo que no te gusta? ¿La sopa? ¿O el pescado? Por favor, no me castigues.
Del llanto (y la actuación) me he tirado al suelo. Sentada de cualquier forma sobre mis piernas, mi cabeza le llega hasta la cadera. Tampoco es que sea muy alta.
Con un brusco gesto me levanta la barbilla. Sus penetrantes zafiros relucen con la luz que entra por la ventana.
Pasan demasiados segundos, ¿habrán sido minutos?, en los que lo único que hacemos es intercambiar emociones por las pupilas. Yo intento decirle que se vaya a tomar viento, pero no parece captarlo. Y de ella percibo cansancio, como si estuviera en las nubes, solo que en esta incómoda posición.
De repente, acorta la ya poca distancia que nos separaba, y roza ligeramente sus labios contra los míos.
—He tenido un mal día —susurra.
Oh, yo sé que significa eso.
—¿Qué… qué quieras que haga? —pregunto igualmente.
Como si valiera de respuesta, me besa con fuerza. Juraría que quiere más que esto, pero se contiene y retira a su cuarto. Siempre que llega se pone algo más cómodo.
Me levanto con cautela, por si se le ocurre regresar. Sin embargo, una vez en pie, tardo poco tiempo en oír el click del cerrojo de su puerta.
Termino de almorzar y me tumbo en el sofá para leer el periódico.
He de decir que suena muy desfasado por mi parte, pero es más barato que comprar una televisión. Al mudarnos a esta casa, que benditamente seguía en venta, tuvimos que vender algunos bienes para pagar cosas con mayor importancia, como la luz, el agua... Y además, los del bar de copas de la plaza no se dan cuenta de que les falta el periódico diario hasta que ya he salido del local. Qué fácil es robar hoy en día. Deberían tener mayores precauciones, incluso con estas tonterías.
Dejo el periódico y cojo un libro de cocina que tengo en la mesa de centro. Mientras deseo irremediablemente que su autora sea la bruja de Hansel y Gretel y no este tal James Oliver, intento concentrarme en la lectura.
Un siseo me distrae. Levanto la cabeza del libro.
Ella está en la cocina.
¿Qué querrá? Rara vez deja su habitación una tarde como esta. Mejor dicho, rara vez deja su habitación.
Veo que se para delante de la barra y luego gira la cabeza porque cree que la miro.
Y así era. No se le escapa nada.
Disimuladamente me giro otra vez a la tarta con lionesas y fresones que tan buena pinta tiene como tan pesada parece ser su receta.
Soy consciente de que ella es consciente de que no me estoy enterando de ningún ingrediente ni nada, pero esto es lo que se suele hacer: seguir a lo tuyo cuando alguien te pilla espiándolo sin permiso.
Entonces la miro de reojo; está más allá de los fogones, frente a los utensilios. Hay cuchillos clavados en sus bases, cucharones y pinchos raros colgados de la pared, un estante con especias… Ella se decanta por los cuchillos. Con sus delicados dedos roza los mangos de cada uno. El del final, el más grande, de forma cuadrada y apto para carne, capaz de cortar hueso; ese es el que desenvaina. Contempla su filo con detalle y su peso como una profesional. Gira el cuello como lo haría un búho, clava sus ojos en mí con la expresión de quien busca en el corral al siguiente pollo al que degollar, y sonríe con placer. Yo también lo hago. Controla su respiración una, dos veces, y… ¡Zash!
Ha lanzado el cuchillo en mi dirección.
Rápidamente me he agachado y cubierto con el libro.
Cuando me yergo, ya no la veo. Cuando me doy la vuelta para averiguar qué tendré que reparar o reponer con MI dinero, la encuentro arrancando el cuchillo de la pared. Aparte de hacer un agujero en la madera, también ha tirado un cuadro.
Qué puntería.
De espaldas, ríe entre dientes.
De lado, me confirma apáticamente:
—La próxima vez no fallaré.
Sabía que esto acabaría así.
