When I was about seventeen years of age, I began to notice the strange anomalies that came about at my high school. I have been seeing the odd appearances since I was about fourteen (I was a freshman), and I always figured that they were just in my head until a boy named Rusty Coleberg, the new kid at Marchen High, came to our school. Rusty was about five foot eleven and was seventeen and a half years old. He had black curly hair with bleached tips and hazel blue eyes that were so bright they were always the first thing you noticed about him. They were like shining blue stars in a pitch black sky. I always got picked on for pointing the strange figures out because no one ever saw them. So I just stopped telling people about it and focused my eyes either on my desk or the teacher and tried my best to ignore them.
"Hey Ruby, think fast!" I heard a loud male voice yell across the cafeteria. I could tell by the voice that it was one of the football kids by the amount of on-purpose voice cracks they were doing, so I just tried to disregard him. About 15 to 20 seconds later, I felt a plastic bag hit the back of my head. As it fell to the ground, I turned around, wondering what it was. I saw there was a folded piece of paper inside, so I picked the bag up off the floor, opened it, and pulled the paper out.
"O. M. G. girl, he so likes you!" Lily, my best friend since second grade, observed. She is very short, probably around five feet tall at most... But she is short for a seventeen-year-old girl. She was born in Mexico, but her parents gave her an American name because they were planning on moving to the States not too long after she was born. The problem was, her parents had a "bad past" and could not get into the U.S. through the border. So, they improvised and snuck into the state illegally, which made her an illegal immigrant. She has long, black hair and blue eyes like her mother, which is very unusual.
I shot her an ‘Are you freaking serious right now?’ look. You know, I don't like him! They're too immature, and they're snobby. " I rebutted. Lily stuck her tongue out at me. "Look, I really don't want to talk about this. He has been trying to get me just to make another girl jealous! I'm tired of being used, and you also know I don't want to date because all people do here is use each other. " Lily's face went pale. She was looking behind me at the entrance of the lunch room. Her eyes broadened, her jaw hanging only from its skin. She stopped blinking in disbelief. "What?" I asked, looking around my shoulder. I noticed a guy I had never met before, but I already knew there was a new student coming, so I didn't worry too much about him. But, apparently, Lily did.
"Oh sorry... it's nothing. I just... I just thought I saw something. " Lily muttered, stuttering as if she had just seen someone die. I found this very odd, considering she is usually a happy-go-lucky, never been afraid in my life kind of girl. "Just read us the note."
"Mmm Hmm... sure. Fine, I'll read it. " I knew she was lying, but if she didn't want to tell me, I understood. " It says, hey. It's Rusty. Who is Rusty? "
Lily looked around, then darted her eyes towards me. After a couple seconds of dead stares, she looked down at the rusty metal table and finally spoke her mind. "Ruby... I know who it is." She muttered mutely. I looked up and dropped the sandwich that was in my mouth from my hands onto my tray.
"Who is it?" I asked, forming a worried look on my face. "Oh no, is it one of your exes? Because I've heard you fight with an ex before, " I chuckled. She didn't respond. All she did was stare at the paper, as if it was a starving family's first Thanksgiving. " Sorry. Are you mad?" I was really starting to get concerned about her.
"No. Just the new student." She responded, still staring at the paper.273Please respect copyright.PENANA0IKIHa4sAO
"If it's just the new student, I don't think you need to worry about anything. It's just a stupid piece of paper anyways!" I assured her. I paused. "How would he know who I am?"
"Haha... uh I don't know. Maybe he threw it at someone random?" She said, shrugging her shoulders. "Some guys are just dumb, right?"
"Yeah I guess." I responded as the bell rang distortedly. "Good lord they need to fix that thing." I shouted. You see, a while back someone thought it would be funny to throw an apple at the bell (they happened to be one of the football players) and they ended up breaking it and getting suspended for vandalising school property.
