CHAPTER 14
I know what y'all must be thinking right now. Y'all are like "You and Eve, must be extremely stupid!"
Am I scared?
Oh hell yeah! I am terrified straight down into my bones. But remembering Iris lying lifelessly on the hospital bed brought in another rush of Adrenaline.
Evelyn and I spent the next two days planning and strategizing. We needed the investigation to go smoothly without any interruptions and injuries. Most importantly, Adrian must not find out or become suspicious at all cost. That was almost impossible because ever since our kitchen encounter, he has been watching me closely.
We decided to carry out the investigation early in the morning. It was a perfect time because Dad would be too busy to notice my disappearance. And Adrian... Don't worry I got him covered. The two days went by and on the night of the second day, I decided to put my plans into action.
As I walked down the stairs, and into the dining room, my heart skipped a million beats in a minute. Then the tiny voice of doubt began to pull at my ears. I summoned the courage I needed before taking my usual seat at the dinner table. I waited for my Dad to finish up his first serve of food before bringing up the topic.
"Hey Dad!" I called as I slowly began cutting up the piece of chicken on my plate.
"Huh?" I heard my dad through his half full mouth.
"I spoke to Evelyn mom on the phone this morning, and she mentioned that she needed Adrian's help in repainting the garage at the cottage." I narrated.
Of course that wasn't the entire truth. Evelyn brought up the idea that Adrian volunteered to do community service on behalf of us. So she suggested that he painted their family cottage tomorrow. Which won't be an easy job. Why? Because Evelyn's Dad isn't one that is easy to please. Plus the cottage is HUGE!
Great idea right? Now all I need is the Yes from Dad, and his phone to ring.
"Um...Fiona,I really don't know about this ." He said as he put down his cutleries reluctantly. He stared as Adrian.
I could feel Adrian's cold gaze on me but I didn't even care, I was watching the time.

"Look Dad, If you don't think it's a good idea then it's okay. I will just call Evelyn and... You know, tell her that you said 'No!'" I concluded in defense.
I smiled inwardly. Now this should work!

8:29...8:30pm. Dad's phone rang, interrupting the uncomfortable silence. He cleared his throat and picked it up.
My lips curved into a triumphant smile. Exact timing... Exact moment!
Evelyn's mom had called. I heard her voice mumbling to dad through the phone.
"Oh of course!... No problem." He replied as he stared intently at Adrian across from him. " We have known Adrian to be charitable and selfless."
After a few more seconds of exchanging pleasantries, Dad ended the phone call and smiled at Adrian reluctantly.
"Evelyn's mum expects you at their home by 8:00 sharp tomorrow morning." He announced. "So we would get an early start and I would drop you off before I go to work. Okay?"
"Yeah, sure..." Adrian mumbled as he glared at me and poked at his chicken with his fork.
"And...mission accomplished." I screamed in my head as I stuffed the rest of my dinner into my mouth.
I took my medications, kissed dad goodnight, wished Adrian one of my many not-so-merry good nights and ran up the stairs and into my room. Slamming the door shut, I ran to my bed and started jumping on it. I resisted the urge to scream out loud. After I finally calmed down, I called Evelyn.
"Well ... The first suspect has been cleared out of the way!" I squealed. " All that is left is to do the search."
