"BOOOYAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!"
I laughed as I slid down the half pipe on my skateboard. Me and my friends are currently skateboarding at a skate park that's near where our school is at. Our school is sort of like a boarding school. We live in dorms there but we don't wear uniforms. It's just like any other ordinary boarding school out there but there's one thing that shows how unique our school is. Our school is an all dragon school. Yes, dragons like the ones with wings and the scales, but everybody at school isn't just the usual dragons you see on tv or read in books. This story actually dates back to a few decades ago when Arcadia was created.
The story is that Arcadia was created by a dragon with human characteristics. He had wings and scales, but he also had hands and feet like humans. Now, this might be a bit difficult to explain, but his hands and feet weren't exactly like humans. Yes, he had fingers and yes he had toes, but he didn't have nails. He still had claws and everything. Not only that, but he still had a nose that was sort of like a dragon's. Anyways, you get the gist. This dragon who created Arcadia fell in love with a human woman. Of course, back then, everybody slayed dragons so nobody wanted them to be together, but they got together anyways. When they both ran away to get married, they had a baby also and that baby was half human, half dragon. What was special about the baby was that the baby was able to change back and forth between dragon and human. It had both human and dragon DNA inside so it was possible. After that, everything changed. The dragon and the young woman created a small town called Arcadia which grew and grew overtime into the current town. Sadly, half human, half dragons are now a rarity these days. I'm not sure when or why it happened but overtime, as Arcadia grew, humans and dragons stopped falling in love and resorted to just falling in love with their own race. Now, it's rare to actually see a half human, half dragon.
Another big thing is that as time grew for Arcadia, humans sort of stopped caring for the dragons and the dragons resorted to hiding themselves. That's why our all dragon school is the only dragon school in Arcadia, but it's far away from the town. You have to drive far into the woods until you reach a gate to get to the school. That's pretty much the story of how Arcadia came to be and how our town lives right now.
Once I finished my half pipe, I moved off to the side to give someone else a chance at trying it.
"I'm going to try to break Augustine's record!" My friend James said.
I watched as James got on the top of the half pipe and started skating. My friend James has yellow skin and green eyes. Then there's my other friend, Kevin who has black skin and blue eyes. It's very easy for him to blend into the dark. My third friend is Tori who has purple skin and hazel eyes. She has a friend named Rebecca who has pink skin and brown eyes, but she isn't here with us right now. She sort of doesn't like skateboarding and has homework to do. That pretty much makes up my whole gang. Tori's dad also works at our school as principle. I think it's pretty cool, but of course if you asked Tori, she would say it's embarrassing to have him around because there are some things that she can't do at school while he's around watching.
I stood next to my friends as we watched James try the half pipe until I saw that James had his wings out and he's now trying to cheat his way into keeping steady on the half pipe.
"Hey! That's cheating!" Tori said as she pointed at James' wings.
James stopped skating and turned to us. "What?" He said.
"You're cheating! You can't do that!" Tori shouted.
James smirked then held his hand up to his ear. "What?" He said again.
Tori stomped over to James and started to shout at him.
"YOU'RE CHEATING!!!!!!"
James then stumbled back and placed both of his hands over his ears.
"Ow! I heard you the first time! No need to shout your lungs off."
"Grr..." Tori said as she looked like she was ready to smack him. It was a good thing Kevin was here to quickly break them up. Kevin quickly grabbed Tori's arm before she could smack the living daylights out of James.
"Tori, stop please. He's just trying to mess with you. You know James is a joker." Kevin assured her.
Tori sighed then snatched her arm away and crossed them over her chest. "I know..."
I just stood there, staring at my friends with a smile on my face. Yup, that's us. James is the school's jokester and troublemaker, Tori is the stubborn and hotheaded, Kevin is the laid back and calm then there's me, just the friendly boy next door type person in our group, but we pretty much balance each other out.
Everything seemed alright until I heard a loud rumble from the sky and we all looked up. The clouds were dark and it looked like it was about to rain, hard.
"Seems like a storm's about to brew." I said outloud.
"Oh great. We haven't even been out here for an hour and we already have to go back inside..." Tori said, pouting again.
"Why do we have to go back inside? Can't we stay out here?" James asked.
"And get wet?" Tori asked. "Besides, it's dangerous to roll around in the rain. What if one of us slips and falls off the half pipe?" She questioned.
"But..." James started.
"I believe Tori is right, James. We could get hurt if we skate on the half pipe in the rain and if we stay out too long, we'll get sick." Kevin assured.
James pouted then looked right at me. "August, you'll back me up right?"
I blinked my bright yellow eyes. I really don't like being in the middle of everything and having to be in the middle between my friends is frustrating, but I have to agree with Tori and Kevin on this.
I sighed then shrugged. "Sorry, James. I agree with Tori and Kevin." I spoke.
James frowned then he dropped his skateboard and walked right over to me. My eyes widen as I slowly held my hands up and started to back away.
"Uh...." I said.
James walked up to me and threw his arms around my neck. I stared into his eyes and I swear I could see them tearing up a little.
"I thought," He sniffed. "I thought what we had was special!!!!!!" He shouted then buried his face into my chest.
I glanced over to Tori and Kevin to see Tori giggling and Kevin smiling. I sighed then looked at James and gently patted his back.
"Um...there. There? Look, i'm sorry, James. I-"
"It's okay, buddy!" James said, pulling away from me with a bright smile on his face. He then turned to everybody.
"Well, let's go then." He said then picked up his skateboard and started to walk out of the skate park. Tori and Kevin followed in pursuit. I groaned softly then grabbed my skateboard and followed after everybody. As we walked out of the skate park and headed back to the school, the sky continued to rumble loudly as if it's warning us that it's about to rain soon.
SOMEWHERE ACROSS TOWN...Riley's POV
"What do you mean you're taking me out of school?" I asked as I stood in front of my parents in the middle of the hallway of my all human school.
"Riley, we both just think it'll be best if you switch to an all dragon school so you can learn about your culture and how the dragon's exist to this day." My human mom told me.
"Sorry if this is sudden, son." My dragon dad told me.
I sighed as I stood there then looked down at my shoes. I've been going to human school's since I was little and now they're putting me into an all dragon school just because they want me to learn the dragon's culture? I can get all the info I need on the internet. I felt someone lift up my head and I saw it was my mom.
"I'm sorry, Riley. How about this, if you don't like being at the school after two weeks, you can come back here. Sounds good?" She suggested.
I pondered for a minute then nodded. At least she's giving me the option to come back instead of keeping me there if I say I don't like it. Though, I hate switching school's in the middle of the year. I already have a couple friends that I've made here. What if everybody at my new school doesn't like me? Especially since i'm...i'm a half dragon, half human. I've heard from my dad that a long time ago, half human, half dragon people died off because nobody wanted to create another half human, half dragon being. It's sad and I wouldn't be surprised if i'm the only half being left in Arcadia.
"Me and your father have to get back to work. You go back to class and we'll talk more about this when you get home. Okay?" My mom said then she kissed my soft, fleshy cheek. I smiled at her and nodded then waved goodbye to her and my dad. I took in a deep breath then let it out. I still felt a little bit nervous about switching schools. Though, i'm probably more worried about how the kids at my new school would think once they find out i'm a half being.
