"Still asleep?" Mitchell whispers as he focuses on driving the car.
Veronica looks to the back-seat at their sleeping friend, Libby. "Yeah, she's still asleep for now."
"I hate this so much."
"So, do I, but what other option do we have, baby?"
"There are options."
"What, like run? Take her with us? We could, but we would be hiding for the rest of our lives. We wouldn't get far, they'd catch us. They're onto us already.
If we're going to ruin our lives and hers, at-least we can end it with making her happy, even if it's only for a short while."
"I guess."
"Woof! Woof, woof, woof!"
"Zekey, shut up." Veronica hisses, turning her attention to Zekey the dog who's laying on Libby's sleeping body.
He whimpers, quietening down. They make it into town, passing a sign beyond falling apart that reads, 'Welcome To Ender Falls' – The roads are quiet at this hour, houses dark too.
Then there is someone standing on the street corner, and he pulls away quickly, taking off down a side street upon a skateboard.
"Fucker." Mitchell curses.
"I hope an asteroid hits him." Veronica adds on, annoyed at the person who took off. They pull into the street they wanted, rolling into the driveway of an old house, paint chipping off. The curtain moves briefly aside, letting light shine out in one of the upstairs windows at the house right next door. Two figures looking out.
"They've seen us now too." Veronica says. "$1 says they will be right over here in the morning." Mitchell responds. Then they hear a yawn in the back, Libby waking up, moving Zekey aside.
"Are we there yet?" She whispers, still groggy.
"Yes, we've arrived actually. Hop out, take your immediate stuff and go with Veronica. She has the keys and I'll unload everything else from the boot and follow you girls in time." Mitchell says, exiting the driver's seat.
"Come on, Zekey!" Libby smiles, hopping out two with a small backpack, running after Veronica.
Not long after, Mitchell follows, carrying the rest of their stuff and he closes the door behind him. A police cruiser hiding in the darkness slowly rolls out of hiding and slowly drives down the road, not making a sound, lights off.
"Chief? Veronica and Mitchell have shown back up. They have the girl with them, and the dog."
"Report back to the station for now, I'll notify social services, the local high-school and the mayor. They ain't skipping town, those kids aren't genius criminals. If anything, they're running around like chickens with their heads cut off because they don't know what else to do.
We'll get to the bottom of their disappearances soon enough." The chief responds via the radio in the police cruiser.
