Chapter 9
It's finally the morning of my first quest. I get changed into my armor and head to the priests church where we will meet. I arrived first as the priest asked me to be early so he could give me something.
As I enter the priest looks up. He waves me over and hands me a bow and quiver as well as two twin daggers. ”I heard from Alex that you trained with the daggers and bow.” he says. I nod thanking him for the gifts.
The bow is made of a foggy crystal with gold vines twining up the bow with green crystal leaves adorning the vines. The knives were made of sharp clear crystal with gold running up and down the handle.
I thank the priest again sheathing the blades and tie the quiver and bow to my back. “The bow and arrows are magical. The arrows will return to the quiver once they hit their mark” the priest explains.
Finally the others arrive with the queen. “ Now that everyone is here, I will give Nia the map to the first shrine: the shrine of wind.” says the priest, handing a large piece of paper to me.
The queen and priest walk us to the front gates of the palace. Meeg has all of our supplies in her huge backpack and we are all given black cloaks. The others look a little worried but I just push open the front gates and walk off into the forest forcing them to follow me. Jasper walks by my side but he doesn't say anything.
Every now and again I check the map to make sure we are going the right way. Soon it becomes night. We set up a campfire and decided to settle down. The others group together and I can tell they are talking about me.
“Are you ok?” asks jasper. I nod trying to ignore the others. Staring up at the sky, I wonder what Amari is doing right now. I hope he is doing ok. Laying down on a patch of soft moss I close my eyes letting sleep over.
The next morning I'm the first one up so I begin making breakfast for Jasper and me. I decided not to make any for the others as they have not been nice to me.
I gently shake Jasper awake and we eat breakfast together. Soon the others wake up and realize i only made breakfast for me and Jasper. Fanyyre gets up and marches over to me
“ why didn't you make breakfast for everyone” she demands hands on her hips. “ why should i.'' I retorted. “ you guys have been nothing but rude. Where Im from there's a saying that goes treat others the way you want to be treated and so far you have not shone me that i should treat you well. Because of that you can make your own breakfast. I say crossing my arms.
“Your too weak. You may be a fae but you were a human first” she says walking back to the others. Suddenly Meeg gets up and comes over. She bows to me before say.” I'm sorry about the things we said about you” she says. “ i can't fight either so it was wrong of me.” i nod and pat the spot next to me.
Her face lights up and she sits next to me smiling. I pull out the extra porridge I had made and hand it to her. I can barely hear Fanyrre mutter” suck up” but I ignore it.
Once the others made their breakfast and have eaten we continued on our way to the shrine. We travel for two more days. Finally we reach our destination.
In front of us lies a tall mountain and obscured by clouds I can barely make out the shrine. “ we have to climb all the way up to that!?” complains Fanyrre. I just roll my eyes and begin to climb. I'm really glad for all the endurance training I did as I'm the only one not gasping halfway up the mountain.
At about two thirds of the way I help carry Meeg as she is gasping for air. Luckily her bag has magic on it to make it incredibly lightweight for having so many things in it
Finally after an hour and a half of climbing we reached the top of the mountain. Before us lay the shine. It was a large building with a door that was small compared to the rest of the building. The building was made of a white marble with wisps of gray in it.
I look around to see if I can see anything. When I look at the door I can see a light red line across the bottom of it. The line looked like the one that led me through the crystal caves.
Fanyrre was about to open the door but I pulled her back.
“What's the big idea?” she says, turning to me angrily. I gently open the door making sure not to go through it. Suddenly the floor behind the door dropped out reading a chasm big enough to swallow a person whole.
The others looked scared but I knew we had to push on if we were going to get the element of wind form the shrine. I needed it to defeat the darkness.
I carefully step over the hole and make my way into the temple with Jasper and Meg close behind. After a moment the rest follow. We enter a room with red all over the walls. There are levers covering the walls and a door opposit the one we entered through.
“I guess we have to choose a lever” says Fanyrre. Beach her hand for a red lever. I bat her hand away. “What is your problem spinning around to glare at me. “ you can't see it but that lever is red.'' I say calmly. “ prove it” she said smugly
I sigh and pull the lever. And the second I do so I step back. A large ax came down on the spot where I was standing. I look over to Fanyrre. Her mouth is gaping open. Meeg and Jasper stand very close to me as I survey the room. Everyone else also stick close. Finally I found a non red lever but it's out of my reach. This is the one time I hate being 5 foot 4.
“Jasper can you give me a boost” I ask , pointing at the lever. He nods, creating a foot hold for me and hoists me up into the air.
Flipping the switch i have jasper lower me back to the ground. Suddenly the room begins to shake and Fanyrre turns to me to make a nasty comment when the door slides open. I smirk at her before walking over the door. I carefully step through before letting the others know its safe.
We go through rooms full of traps one after another but I stay strong as I look out for the red marks. After an hour of going through the rooms we reach a large room with a pedestal in the middle
Floating above the pedestal was an orb of what looked like a tornado. When Fanyrre tried to touch it she was flung across the room. The room was filled with wind forcing the others to their knees. I was the only one who wasn't affected by the wind. While it was a gale to the others it just tickled me.
I walk up to the pedestal and grab the orb. The wind stopped and everyone could stand again. The second I stepped off the pedestal a door at the far side of the room opened and we walked toward the exit. We had completed our first quest.
