“Can I talk to you?”
It was a shock. The phone in his pocket buzzed. Why had the younger boy, who’d been eyeing him for the duration of the session, want with him? Was he going to reveal that the bruised eye he currently sported was fresh from a fight he’d been in, and he was going to beat the older boy into a pulp because he’d been looking at him in a bad way?
As his mind started to race through the possibilities, the smaller brunette pulled him closer to shelter, mumbling “It’s raining, c’mon,” as he did so.
He hadn’t even noticed the rain, but followed, just in case it would annoy the younger. As he was pulled, he grabbed the phone out of his pocket, glancing at it. It displayed one message from his father which read “Walk home”. That felt colder than the rain he’d just realised.
They both got undercover, and the taller asked what he was called out for.
“Well, you’ve been going through a lot, right?” He asked, no hint of anything other than concern in his voice.
He nodded; Why was this kid so interested about him? Why was he so concerned that he’d have to pull aside an almost complete stranger.
“You said a stalker?”
He nodded once again. It felt like he had other motives, but voice was so sincere and his voice just oozed concern. His face also reflected the feeling his voice gave off.
“Well, u-uh, if you need someone to, um, talk about that stuff, I can help you,” He paused for a second, breaking eye contact and ears flushing a bright red. “Um, my brother, see, he had a stalker for a while so-” He cut himself of and looked up once again.
The bigger of the two was now thoroughly confused. This awkward kid was really worried about him? Because his brother went through the same thing? He almost wanted laugh.
His phone buzzed in his pocket once again. “Is that while you were staring that whole time?” he chuckled.
He looked shocked. “You noticed that?!” His face grew red with embarrassment.
He nodded for a third time. Maybe this kid wasn’t as hostile as he seemed. And this felt like the first time he’d laughed since the prom, which seemed like years ago.
“Er, no, no, that’s not why I was staring.” He looked away again. “Every time I see you, I get crazy Deja Vu. I thought the more I thought about it, the better I could understand it, you see? My brain kinda just works like that, if I focus for long enough, I can generally figure things out,” He rambled.
The older though about this for a second, and came to a conclusion. “… So, because you couldn’t figure it out, you tried to get closer to me?” He continued for the other.
The responded with a quiet, but shaky, affirmation of the statement.
“And that’s why you’ve got a death grip on my hands?” His eyes drifted to the hands tightly griping his
The other took a second to register the statement, and he flushed a brighter red than before, hands flying into the air faster than anything the older had seen before.
And he laughed. He laughed so hard. He’d never seen someone this awkward before, nor a scene as hilarious as the one he’d just witnessed. This kid was great was his first thought, as he clutched his stomach, falling to the ground with laughter.
The younger covered his beat-red face with his hands and sunk to the ground in embarrassment. “Urg, I’m sorry.” he mumbled.
Trying to recover from the laughter attack, he sat up and gave himself a few seconds to regain his breath. “No,” He grasped the boy’s hands and lowered them from his crimson face. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have laughed.”
As a blanket of silence fell of the two, the younger started to rock from side, red falling away from his face slowly. His phone buzzed again.
This time, while the two boys were in a comfortable silence, he checked his phone. He’d gotten more messages than he’d thought he’d received. And they were all from one name.
His head snapped back to the playground behind them, and that’s where she stood.
