I felt kind of bad talking to him so directly like that. Was I disrespectful, giving him advice despite him being older? I decided to apologize.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Carter”
”hmm? About what?”
“I didn’t mean to disrespect you when I expressed my opinion. Did I say something unnecessary?”
He smiled at me, but unlike that scary smile a while ago, this one looked kind?
”Not at all” he paused “honestly, I’m glad I met you, kid”

”it’s been a long time since someone talked to me honestly, sorry that I had to threat you like that. You could have just left me, when I walked away, but you stopped me and expressed your opinion, even giving me suggestions. You know what was the first thing that came to my mind when you finished?”
”how dare you speak to me like that?” I joked, since his mood seemed okay.
”really funny” He chuckled “I thought, did this kid forget that I’m a gangester? Why did you do all that?”
He paused.
“You’re odd, you’ve got guts, but you’re also kind. It’s rare to find someone like that these days. Maybe my luck today wasn’t so bad since I had good time talking to you”
“T-thanks” I hope I didn’t blush, since I was too embarrassed. I’m bad at taking compliments.
“Anyways, sorry I caused you trouble”
I felt relieved that his mood was good. Maybe I was safe?
”it’s no trouble at all! I’m sorry if I was rude in any way. I’m also a hypocrite, judging you from your outfit, even though I don’t know anything about you, Mr. Carter” I smiled in relief.
Mr. Carter looked at me for a bit without saying anything, then said “you really don’t want to join my gang?”
I was sure about my answer “I’m sorry, Mr. Carter, but I want a quiet life” I said apologetically.
”that’s such a shame. I feel that the gang will be more interesting with someone like you” He said, make his disappointment too obvious. Haha, Did he want me to feel bad?

I didn’t overhear his conversation since I was worrying over being late at coming home. I looked at my hand watch (it had the shape of a yellow star, I don’t care if it seemed childish, because I thought it was cute!). It was almost 1 p.m. I wondered if Spencer had lunch yet. I sent him a message that I’ll be a bit late since I was hanging with Hana, so that he won’t worry, but I doubt he’ll worry since he’ll go gambling with Jack.
In few minutes, a big group of men and women wearing a similar outfit to Mr. Carter arrived, except that they wear holding umbrellas. They quickly surrounded us, in an organized manner. One woman brought an umbrella above Mr. Carter, while a man wearing glasses, brought a jacket and a cigar to him.
”Do the meeting start?”
”There is still 10 minutes, boss. You arrived right on time”
hmm? Did I hear that correctly? did he say “boss”?!!!
Mr. Carter dropped the jacket on his shoulders and put the cigar in his mouth. The glasses man, lit the cigar with a lighter quickly.
”Is everyone ready? Did the others arrive yet?”
“The Red Scorpions and Goldfinches arrived around half an hour ago. The White snakes have not arrived yet”
”Hah! So that means we arrived earlier! I can finally tell that snake that HE’S the one who’s late” Mr. Carter chuckled as he said that happily.
”Boss, we have to go right now. Even if we’re earlier than them, they might reach the meeting room before us if we let down our guard”
”You don’t have to tell me that, but before that...” he looked at my direction with a smile.
”Kid, you really helped me today. Probably more than you can think. So it’s only natural that I repay you. However, I have to take care of some business. I’m sorry but I’ll trouble you by waiting for few hours until then”
”b-but Mr. Carter-“ I couldn’t continue saying anything before he suddenly patted me on the head roughly.
”Natalie, take care of the kid, but don’t let him be harmed. Take him to the buffet or something”
”yes, sir” a young woman with short hair and blue eyes like Mr. Carter walked and stood beside me. There were few gangsters behind her.
“Well, then, I’ll see you in a while, kid” he waved at me with a calm smile, with the cigar releasing thick smoke, then walked fast towards the entrance of the hotel, followed by many gangesters.
”Shall we get going?” The gangester woman, Ms. Natalie, said in a firm tone, giving me a small push forward. I started walking towards the entrance as well. My legs felt really weak, and my heart was thumbing so loudly in my chest.
(W-what should I do....) my mind was blank in shock.
