Before anyone could speak, Mnemosyne sensed the sisters. “You my dears, are suffering. You have blocked out all things from before a few months ago. You must remember if you are to heal.” She then walked over to them and placed her hands on their cheeks. Her hands were soft and warm, the girls relaxed. Her hands glided to their heads and rested on top of their hair. The girls faces changed from calm to intense, like they were suddenly on a roller coaster. Memories flooded back to them, from learning to walk, birthdays, first day of school. The second civil war, its ending. The formation of the Ohio Valley Federation. It’s fall to the American Empire. Dad volunteering for a government experiment to keep the house, there were no jobs. The third civil war, dad leading that one. Then the Saurians and the mess we are in now. They remembered the fall of the first spire. Being captured. Dad breaking free, killing all aboard. Fitting them with parachutes. Mom out first. Then Eriana. Erika before dad. Then Erika found Pupil.
The two sat, sobbing. Remembering how good life was when they were young. Before all of the death and destruction. Before carnage was the norm, when they could enjoy the spring breezes and summer sun. When learning to drive was the hardest thing.
Mnemosyne looked at Pupil, he shook his head. She smiled a knowing smile. He spoke, “Death needs your help at the Saurian gates. Go you should......and thank you, for restoring their memories.”
“They were always there, just to painful to recall. They have been through quite a lot. Their souls are strong, but they have been only seeing the good in man to this point.”
“Aware I am of this. A new teacher soon they will have. Master sheltered them from the darkness in man’s soul.” He looked up at her. “Changing I am, when they part and then return, recognize me they may.”
“Your test begins soon,” her voice chimed. “It may break you.”
“Indeed” Pupil paused. “Safe travels my cousins, I have sisters to comfort and a new destination to make.”
The goddess and the muses parted from our travelers just as Jacks and his men approached.
“We felt the ground shake....” Jacks started.
“Shhhh. Comfort my sisters I must. Then talk we will.”
Pupil placed his hands on the girls shoulders, they stopped crying long enough to look at him.
“Your left hand.....Pupil, it’s normal now!” Erika said
“And his right eye, Erika look.”
Erika looked at his eye. His right cheek looked normal, allowing his eye to open all the way.
“What’s going on with you?” Erika wanted to know.
“No time for that now. Talk to Jacks I must, if OK you are?”
“I think we are fine, it was just so much at once. You OK Eriana?”
Eriana nodded, “I’ll be fine, just need a minute.”
“Good.” Pupil scampered over to Jacks. The two talked a bit, and then Jacks moved his men and the dragon into the spire.
“Come, we must go. It going to get busy here.”
Bambi was already in the basket, chewing on a raw hide. The three saddled up and rode of into the sunrise.
