It's about a man named James Baxter going off to the second world war in a week. He regrets not having done all the things he's wanted to do in life, like; he's never smoked or drank, become successful, gotten a job, or found a lover. Feeling hopeless, he walks into a bar where he meets Art Johnson, another man going off to war. Art seems to be the complete opposite of James.
