That was an odd question. I was really bad at lying, so I didn’t reply right away.
”umm...I was too anxious to eat at a grand hotel”
”there is a lie” the glasses gangester beside Mr. Carter suddenly said that.
Mr. Carter looked at me, his expression still dark.
”Say, kid, what’s your name?”
”Rae Pillar, sir”
”okay, little Rae. Here is the deal. I want you to tell me about everything that happened from the beginning, and by that I mean, starting from when we parted at the hotel entrance until you fainted. Don’t leave any details. My friend Kyle here (pointing his thumb towards the glasses guy) is a human lie detector. He can tell if you’re lying or not, and he never failed once at that. So you better not lie to me, or there will be consequences”
...Did I just lie now? I said “I was too anxious to eat at a grand hotel”...it wasn’t completely false, but it’s not completely true either. I didn’t eat because I was scared of being tricked by them, rather than being just anxious. Is that the lie?
i looked at the glasses guy, Mr. Kyle. He was a brunette with dark eyes, and looked at me with a sharp gaze. Was it true that he could detect lies?
I couldn’t risk my life with this kind of doubt, so I decided to be honest. I understood that they suspect me to be involved in poisioning.
I told them everything I saw and experienced when I was brought to the buffet hotel. I told them how I was anxious that I might be tricked into debt by eating expensive food. I told them I was tired and hungry. I told them about Ms. Natalie trying to get me to eat. I told them I covered my ears and closed my eyes to block my senses. I told them that I saw everyone in pain after that and how I fainted afterwards.
”...You have some trust issues, kid”
“No offense, sir, but you can never be too cautious when dealing with a gang”
“that makes sense. It’s not like all gangs are kind like us, how’s the result, Kyle?”
”no lies. Do we let him go?”
him? They think I’m a guy? It’s not surprising though, considering my short hair, and baggy cheap clothes. However, considering my serioussituation at the time, I didn’t want to interrupt them for this trivial matter.
“Not yet. Not until we’re done with the investigation. Sorry about this, little Rae, but we’ll have to extend your stay here for few days. Just think of it as a luxurious vacation in Majestic Hotel. Such an experience is probably impossible come by for some one like you in their lifetime, you know”
W-What?!!
”b-but, sir-“
”this is final. Kyle, call Paul to keep the kid safe and take care of his needs. That useless guy is lucky we’re this busy, or I would’ve punished him for being late for the meeting”
”yes, sir” Mr. Kyle left the room. Mr. Carter stood up and turned towards the door.
”They’re quiet daring, don’t you think?”
huh? Was he talking to me?
”for someone, or some group, to poison the members of multiple big gangs, they sure are daring. However, for us, the Blue Wolves, they’re just looking for their deaths”
his tone was severe. Suddenly, he kicked the chair he was sitting on so hard, that it broke into many parts when it hit the wall. I felt shocked at the noise, and averted my gaze from him.
”little Rae?” I heard a low voice calling my name, and looked towards it’s direction. Mr. Carter’s face was too close to mine.
“I swear I’m going to find the culprit who dared to harm my subordinates, and when I do, I’ll show them no mercy. Anyone involved with no exceptions will be punished severely. Do you understand what I’m trying to say?”
He was angry. Really angry.
I nodded. How could I not understand? It was a clear threat.
”Good” He smiled. The drastic change in expression was so creepy.
He moved away and turned his back towards me as he walked towards the door.
”now be a good boy and don’t cause trouble to your guard here, okay? I promise that once we find everything and if you’re not involved in any way, we’ll release you”
I nodded again, even though he was facing the door. That’s how panicked I was.
After he left the room, I released a deep breath I wasn’t aware I was holding.
HE WAS SCARY!!! I WAS SO SCARED!! I THOUGHT I WOULD DIE RIGHT THERE!!
I breathed slowly to calm myself down. Panicking wouldn’t get me anywhere. I had to calm down and think about my situation. I was stuck in a hotel because I was being suspected of poisoning members of multiple big gangs...An incident as big as that...I doubted that I’ll stay there for only “few days”. Just how my luck was that bad? Even though I’m innocent, how could I even guarantee they’ll let me go? They’re a gang!! I sighed in depression as I looked at the window.
”Ahem” I heard a cough, and turned my head.
”ehh, are you okay?”
