My alarm went off at 7 am sharp. I roll out of bed knowing that if I don't get up mom will come and pound on my door until I get up. Heading to the shower I let the hot water run down my body before drying off. Just as I step out of my bathroom my mom comes and bangs on my door. “Nia it's time to get up” she yells, not even bothering to open the door and check if i was up.” im up” i yell back I roll my eyes pulling on a black hoodie before sitting at my vanity to brush my hair. I have long 4a hair.
My mom and dad came to America from Kano, Nigeria before settling down in the state of Mississippi. My parents have held on to our African heritage. Mother loves to wear her Siki on special occasions. When I am done detangling my hair I pull it into a low ponytail before heading down for breakfast. My brother Amari is already at the table eating his favorite breakfast PB&J while I eat some cornflakes. Dad is sitting at the head of the table reading the newspaper. He barely looks up when I sit down. while mom shuffles around in the kitchen i begin to scroll through my phone. “ put away your phone, child.” says mom as she sits down. Groaning, I stick my phone in my pocket.
When I finish my cereal I excuse myself from the table and head back upstairs to grab my backpack. After packing my notebooks for my Wednesday classes which are biology, calculus, art history and gym. Just as I sling my backpack I hear a tiny knock on my window. It's the little fairies. They visit me every day before school and I give them a few sugar cubes which they enjoy. Only i can see the fairies. I have been able to see them my whole life and everyone calls me crazy because they can't see what I see. Everyone but amari that is. He loves it when I tell him the stories I hear from the fairies and he loves watching me when I give them sugar cubes because he only sees the floating sugar cubes.
I open the window allowing the fairies to fly in, each one picking up a sugar cube. When they have all flown back outside I close the window again. I head back downstairs, kissing Amari on the forehead before heading to the door so I can catch the bus. Just as I climbed aboard the bus I was tripped by a leg that was stuck out purposefully in the aisle. I catch myself looking behind me when I am stable again. It was Lexi, my school bully. Ever since middle school she has been picking on me everyday. Whether it is tripping me in the bus isles to hiding my stuff where she knows I won't look, she does it constantly. It's mostly annoying but I put up with it. I head to the back of the bus when I can sit in peace. During school I focus on my work.
During lunch I head to the library so I can eat the lunch mom packed for me which consisted of jollof rice and Gizdodo which are my favorite. Naturally Lexi couldn't survive without annoying me so I noticed when she entered the library but I was in one of the hidden nooks so she would have to look really hard to find me. I watched her for a little bit but when she couldn't find me she practically stormed out of the library.
Finally it's time to go home. My mom normally picks me up after school so I don't ride the bus. Mom knows that Lexi picks on me but she doesn't quite believe me since the two of us were friends when we kids but it all changed in middle school. But still mom respected my wish to pick me up after she picked up Amari.
Outside of the school I wait for mom to pull up. When she does, I hop into the passenger's seat. Amari giggles as I climb in, handing me his art project of the day. He drew a picture of him and me hanging out in our little camp out in the forest behind the house. I smile. I love my little brother with his curly black hair and deep brown eyes. His dark brown skin is like mine. The two of us have dark skin that people say glow in the sunlight.
Mom was silent the whole drive while Amari told me all about his day. “ Nia?” he asks as I help him out of his car seat. I nod unbuckling to him. “ Can we go to the camp?” he asks. I grin. “ Let's put up our stuff and then we can go to the camp. How about that” hi jumps up and down clearly excited before running to bring his backpack to his room and to grab his favorite toy Mimi. I drop my bag off too before heading downstairs to grab some snacks like banana chips and Kokoro which is Amaris favorite.
When Amari comes back downstairs we head out into the backyard when we reach the fence gate i unlatch the door holding it open while Amari goes through and then closing it behind me. We walk hand in hand to what we call our camp
The camp is a small tent made our of some old fabric with some tree stumps for chairs. We sit down on the stumps and eat our snacks before heading deeper into the forest. The two of us look around with me looking around for any fairies. We walk for half an hour before we reach a strange new part of the forest.
The trees become a white birch with green magical looking moss hanging down from the branches. The ground in this strange grove was a soft green moss. I decide to take my shoes of and the moss squishes under my toes. Little fairies are floating round whispering into my ears.
We decide to sit down on the soft ground for a while as the tiny fairies tell me their stories and I relay them to Amari who listens carefully trying to hear what I hear in the wind.
We relax for a bit before it is time to go home and do our homework. Just as I got up and began to grab our stuff I heard Amari scream. Wiping around I see a group of strange men. Grabbing my brother and disappearing into a strange glowing portal. Without even thinking i jump into the portal chasing after the men who stole my beloved little brother.
