Song: Anywhere by Passenger

Before they became a couple, they were best friends.
And what is meant by the term best friends in this case, it was basically two children who were inseparable. They did everything together, they got their first teeth together, went to parties together and even ate together.
But that all changed when she hit puberty. And this happened to her a lot faster than it did to him.
She started to drift apart from him, she started to make friends with other people, she began to notice boys- particularly, not him.
When he stopped paying so much attention to his books and games and finally grew into this faze, he was almost the opposite of her- he stayed in seclusion, and he didn’t notice girls at all. Except for her.
She wasn’t like normal to him, though. Instead, she was surrounded in a halo of beauty. Her voice, turned from a voice that he’d normally hear every day, and take for granted, to a spine-tingling melody. A voice of a goddess.
He didn’t know why he felt like this. Until he learned about love.
His mother was always one for chick flics, and one night he joined her. He was overwhelmed by the dedication that the man put into pursuing the woman. It was such a pure love, so delicate, so beautiful.
And that’s when he realised what he felt was love. She was the heroine, and they were destined to be together.
And that’s when he started to write the letters.
Even though he loved to read, he was never good at creative writing. Nor any writing, for that matter. But the hero of that movie had written those letters to that woman, so he was going to do the same.
The first few were little shaky, and in his first day of trying, he really didn’t get a good start on one. Not even a good draft.
He tried for another week. He would try again, and again, and again, pouring his heart into every try he did, but nothing felt good enough.
That’s when he realised Valentine’s Day was coming up. He was going to do a perfect letter, he was going to buy chocolates, and she would start to fall in love with him. It was going to be perfect, as perfect as in the movies him and his mother now regularly watched together.
Two days before the day, he took a detour when walking home- there was a fancy chocolate store on the main street close by.
He prayed to every higher power he knew that his allowance money would cover a good present for her.
Everything was too expensive, he was scared what the price would have been before the Valentine’s special. It was basically fraud. People shouldn’t have to pay this much for a box of chocolates. His pocket money would never be able to cover anything good in this store.
He left the store dejectedly and entered the local store. Instead of look for fancy chocolates, he selected the chocolates that he knew were her favourite. He chuckled to himself at this fact- he really knew her too well.
Returning home, he got started on the love letter. One draft, two drafts, three drafts, four drafts, five drafts later and he was still not satisfied. He needed a break.
Pacing through his small room, he wondered. And then he realised that he’d been doing the process wrong the whole time- instead of writing fake words of love that just sounded romantic, he should write what he loved about her. What he treasured about her. Why he loved her.
And the words flew onto the page. Like a water overflowing in a dam, the words came magically onto the page. And when he read through it, he knew this one was perfect.
Valentine’s day was sunny. A perfect day. He arrived before anyone else but the teachers, and placed the box on the desk, remembering to place the love letter on top.
She came half an hour later. She spied the present on her desk, and her eyes lit up. He was sure that she knew it was from him, and now she was finally in love.
Unexpectedly, she stored the letter in her desk, not even bothering to glance over it, opened the box of chocolates, and turned to chat with her friends.
He was sure he could hear his heart break at that moment.
