I wake up to Damion cursing in the kitchen at my alarm. Rolling over in my tangle of blankets, I shut off the alarm rolling back over out of bed to the closet. I pick out a brown knee long skirt with a cream sweater, making me feel like a garden maid in a fantasy world. I brush my hair then grab my pack and swing it over my shoulder before walking down the stairs. I find Damion flipping eggs in a frying pan with broken eggs shells covering the countertop. Damion has been my best friend since we were little, and we are very platonic about each other. So, it's a perfect match when I bought the house and he needed a place to stay, he pays half of the bills and so do I. It was perfect, and so were his eggs. I sit at the table, scarfing down the heavenly eggs.
"You can still breathe while eating, y'know," Damoin exclaimed as he sat down to eat his own eggs. His small-town accent hitting hard.
"Yes, I do know, but this method is faster, and I'm running a little late," I say in a hurry.
I take my plate to the sink and rinse it off, setting it in the dishwasher. I walk over to Damion, giving him a small side hug and saying I'll be home around 4. Snatching my keys from the bowl, I walk out the door, unlocking my car as I walk and hop in, basically peeling out of the driveway. I realize the time and speed up a little more, noting I had to be there before 7:00am to open. No later than 7:00 I arrive a few minutes before, quickly scurrying inside and locking the door inside rushing all my task.
I set all my things down on the desk and turn, stopping dead in my tracks. Dropping my jaw, all the books are gone. Just gone not on the floor only gone. I sprint around the library looking for any book or any pages on the floor, but I find nothing. Panic rushes through me as I drop to the floor, feeling overwhelmed. I reach a shack hand for my phone when I hear a low rumble coming from the lounge. I pick myself up and walk wearily toward the hum. I find a book sitting alone on the small coffee table next to the auburn-colored sofa. The hum is a convincing sound, and it draws me closer and closer. My vision blurts as I pick up the book and feel the hum rising in the soles of my feet and up towards my chest, reaching all the way up to my ears. An emptying feeling overcomes me, and I watch hazily as smoke rises from the book and takes over the room. My legs go numb, rooting me in my place as the smoke makes no visible space. My eyes shut, and the emptiness takes over as I collapse to the floor.
