Ember now 17 years old blinks out of her trance, when the bell sounds for the ending of the day for Westview High school. She along with a few other students gather up their books and fly out of the classroom. Ember waits till everyone is out of the classroom then ambles up to the teacher. English AP; Mrs. Drow looks at Ember, "Well, hello Ember."889Please respect copyright.PENANA3RV4Sd4A4K
"Hey . . . I . . . uhh . . .did that report for extra credit that you had up on the board last Friday." Ember reminds Mrs. Drow.889Please respect copyright.PENANAFQwi1FB1Av
Mrs. Drow looks confused then smiles no remembering the extra credit assignment. She thought that no one actually did it, but she could always count on Ember to do it. "Oh, yea. But, your grades are awesome." Mrs. Drow flips open her grade-book to show Ember her grades throughout the entire semester. Ember comes around the desk and looks at her grades. Nothing but 90's, 100's, and one 89. "Why all of the extra credit work when you have great grades?"
Ember smiles a weary smile, "Because I want to get into the best college. So, I know that doing so, requires a lot of work." Ember explains to Mrs. Drow.
Mrs. Drow smiles as Ember hands her he thick 5 page report, Mrs. Drow takes it, and scans through it. "I am sure just your personality will get you in alone."
Ember smiles and leaves the room. Walking towards the front of the building for car riders, she remember that today is the day she goes to group therapy. Something she truly hated about group therapy; listening to 5 other teenagers issues. The biggest issue is their parents. However, she loves her therapist; Mrs. Vik.889Please respect copyright.PENANA3sQaNWJ0kB
Stopping at her locker, she is almost knocked over by a few students running towards the corridor. Then another student comes crashing into Ember, she holds tightly onto her locker's door so she wouldn't fall on the floor with the student. "Excuse me." The female student says to Ember.889Please respect copyright.PENANA9wclnxYklY
"It's alright." Ember corrects her posture. "What's the hurry?" She doesn't know the female student but she has seen her around the campus a few times. The female student stands up and brushes her jeans off. Then looks at Ember a little wide eyed, "You're Ember Honeylake."889Please respect copyright.PENANA7n5U023nq3
Ember nods closing her locker, "Yes, I am."
"You have to come, quick." The female student grabs Ember's arm and quickly runs to where a huge crowd of students has gathered. The earsplitting cheering makes Ember's ears ring, "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!!!" The crowd roars.889Please respect copyright.PENANAGHMM2iYgXg
The female student still holding Ember's arm pushes her way to the middle of the circle. Ember is never one to run towards a fight especially in school. Security isn't as tight as it needs to be. In the middle, Ember eyes the two boys fighting. She can't really tell what is going on or who is winning or who is who. Staring at the two boys, she notices the curly brown hair and realizes that it's her twin brother; the one who is getting beat up. Freaking out on the inside, Ember shoves her backpack to the female student that dragged her to the fight. She wasn't sure what she is going to to do. Taking a hit is nothing to Ember, but form two guys that are probably fighting over something so petty . . . is totally different. On the other hand, she does not want her brother to get into trouble, considering he had already been kicked off the basketball and football team this year alone.889Please respect copyright.PENANAMGbr1noGIn
However, one night Ember remembers eavesdropping on her brother's conversation with one of his homeboys or his girlfriends. Well, Ember was really bringing him dinner. He said, "No, I would have beat his ass if my dumbass sister didn't jump in. Now, I got nigs pickling on me and not wanting to fight because of her. They think that she will jump in."889Please respect copyright.PENANAqvHOeORxG7
Ember blinks and grabs her bag from the female student and pushes her way through the crowd.
The female follows Ember, "Wait, you aren't going to help your brother?" The female asks curious.889Please respect copyright.PENANANvO7j4fINT
Ember continues walking and answers, "No, I am not. It's not my fight nor is it my issue." She tells the female student as they reach outside.
The afternoon sun beams down on Ember causing her light brown hair to go a little lighter and her hazel eyes squint.
"I can't always fight for him when he is losing or winning. Nor will I do so." Ember sits on the faded black bench in the shade and the student sits by her. 889Please respect copyright.PENANATYpM9EXwKy
"I understand," she says with a flick of her wrist and a snap of her fingers. "My brother is just as hard headed and don't wanna learn nothing."
"Mhmm." Ember agrees with her.
"He thinks these streets will give him something. I keep telling him they don't owe him a damn thing. But, he doesn't wanna listen."
"Exactly. They will understand."
"Surely in enough time. Oh, my manners," she turns her body to me. "My name is Banne Clay, I am a junior here."
"Ember Honeylake."
"You're the smart girl."
Ember blushes, "I wouldn't say that. I am a senior. I just try my best to be able to get into a good college." She shrugs.
"That's understandable. Everyone wants better for themselves."
/I wish my brother did./ Ember thinks to herself. A black Ford truck pulls up in front of the school. Ember stands up and puts her bag on. "That's me. It was nice meeting you, Banne."
"You too. I will see you tomorrow." She waves and I nod getting in the truck.
"Uh, where is your brother?"
"He got in a fight and I am sure he is in the office now, uncle."
"That boy will never learn," He pulls the truck into a parking spot and gets out then goes into the school.
