Merida
Mere goodness can achieve little against the power of nature.
My heart stopped as I witnessed the horror that lied in front of me. The crash came so suddenly that it felt like the world came to a halt. Someone screamed as I shielded my eyes from the impact of the splintering oak.
Internally, I could feel the fears from the pack all at once. But I couldn't pinpoint which emotion belonged to whom, it all became a fucked up mess inside my head.
Melody shifted sharply inside of me as the disgusting decaying scent of vampires filled my senses. I came to alert immediately as Mia and Kristen ran over to help the stranger that burst through our doors earlier.
Focus. Take note of your surrounds. What do you see? What do you hear?
My father's lessons take root as I focus on the pack. Mia and Kristen are the closest to the door. Caleb and Victor are rushing in from the kitchen. Dr. Scott and the others are training in the clinic. They won't get here in time. But we still have several warriors in the pack house.
I need to call out to them. I need to get them to focus on making sure our weakest pack members are safe. Just focus and call out--
"Hello, little pup."
Rage engulfed me at the sight of that creature's hand on my mate's neck. Melody was at the surface immediately, but before we could react, the raven haired vampire threw my mate into the hallway.
She crashed into Caleb before he could finish his change but luckily Victor managed to dodge both of them, jumping into the chaos to cover Kristen.
Drawing on my power, I shifted within a breath. Intending to rip the neck off Raven Hair, my focus was quickly interrupted as another vampire ran towards Caleb and Mia at light speed. Leaping off the stairs, I caught the vampire just in time.
Burying my teeth in his neck, Melody jerked and we ripped his head clean off together. Melody takes a glance towards Mia and we notice Caleb's brown coated wolf take over. At the moment he finished, Caleb flies past me, grabbing the arm of another male vampire.
Looking back, I see Mia struggling to get off the floor as she held her neck. I want to approach her but I still, instantly taken aback by the abnormal change in her eyes.
The soft earth tone color of my mate's eyes were gone. All that replaced it was a void of darkness. Mia blinked once and then twice before the normal look of her eyes came back.
She's alive, that's all that matters. Melody tells me as he urges me to focus on the task at hand.
I snap back to the chaos as I turn towards my target. From behind him, more vampires burst through the entrance overwhelming the trio in front. I sprint into the battle, taking the neck of the first one I come across.
The blonde female digs her claws into my side causing me to lose my grip on her. I'm thrown off her as she kicks my ribcage hard with her boot. I regain myself the moment I hit the floor, shooting up and ready to face her once again.
Luckily for me, a warrior comes out from the side of her, catching the vampire off guard. Her body turning to ashes before she could even scream. I turn as another comes my way with a blade. Narrowly dodging the attack, Melody goes for the side.
Hissing, the male juts his blade towards my arm but misses, leaving a mere flesh wound. Pathetic. I think, as we finish him off.
My throat closes for a moment as I witness more of my pack mates and vampires clash into one another. Melody shakes his head, as we fight the pounding desire to go find our mate.
She alive. Focus. He urges.
A thought comes across to me. Maybe we should—
Suddenly, I hear one of my packmates shout in pain. I jerk my head to the sound as I notice Kristen standing against three vampires. Behind her, the strange woman that came right before the vampires lies unconscious.
Kristen kicks out at one vampire but is then sliced by another red headed one across the arm. Regardless of the disadvantage, she refuses to move from the stranger.
They're mates. Melody and I realize as I sprint over to her.
Melody leaps over the mess of vampires and wolves as we crash straight into the vampire at her right. With a swift move, I hear something snap as she turns into a heap of ashes. Kristen takes the opportunity I gave her and kicks the vampire in front of her into the crowd.
Which leaves the red head. I go for the leg leaving the kill to Kristen. Melody's jaw locks onto her thigh as she tries to bring her blade down but Kristen catches her arm before she has the chance to strike.
We move together as we tear the vampires limps clean off. Her screams of agony pierce my ears over the sounds of the raging battle but she's quickly silenced as Kristen takes her blade and slices it through her neck.
"We're getting overwhelmed." Kristen says in a panic as the red head drops to ash. "There's too many of them."
She's right. We can't handle this amount with only a few warriors, a few of which are newbies. And the others are off ensuring the safety of the weakest in the pack.
Think, Merida. I need to do something. Digging through my trainings, I think back to one thing that might give us an advantage.
"Have you ever heard of Photonic Build-up?" Dr. Scott asks me as I shook my head.
We stand in the center of the newly built training grounds, the area surrounding us is occupied by very few warriors who were brave enough to stay after we got here.
I ignore the sharp pain of grief in my chest over the pack members who left the moment I arrived. Over the months, as more of the pack learned about my gift... and how strong it could get, they slowly began to distance themselves from me whenever I trained.
I didn't blame them for it, it was reasonable to be afraid of something that they couldn't understand. And it wasn't like I had a solid grasp on it anyway. But still, it hurt to lose the trust of your pack, regardless of how much Father tried to reassure me.
"Well, from my studies, I discovered that it's possible to achieve it. Photonic Build up, also known as Accumulation is when you store enough Light in your body to cast out all at once."
"So, like a conductor?"
"Yes, but no. You see you already have a powerful source within you. But if you were to take it," He gestured with hands, turning them as if he was holding a ball. "and ball it up like this. You can cast it out all at once. It would appear as if you were blinded by the sun."
I thought about it for a moment. "So, form a ball from within and cast it out in different directions?"
"Precisely." Dr. Scott beamed. "It's a good defensive measure, don't you think?"
Perfect.
Taking control from Melody, I mimic my actions from that day.
Step one: Calm down. I'm aware that everything is hectic around me but unless I want this to work, I need to focus.
Step two: Focus on my heartbeats. I decided a while ago to make my heart the center of this spell.
Step three: Hone the magic within. I take the light from within me and force it into the center.
Just think and feel.
Step four: Build. Little by little, I feel the power within me grow. The pressure in chest begins to make my heartbeats erratic but I ignore it. This will only take a second.
It's simple.
Step five: Release.
I force the power out in all directions, as the room erupts in a blinding white light. The moment my magic recklessly shoots out from my body, I hear the hisses and screams from various people all around me. However, because the light had yet to fade, I couldn't tell whether they were from our enemies or my pack.
Despite the release in my magic and the emptiness in my chest, my heart still felt heavy at the sudden thought of what I could've accidentally caused once the light fades.
"They're fleeing." Kristen breathes raggedly as relief floods into me.
That's one problem dealt with. I glance over to the unconscious stranger behind Kristen that called out my mate's name only moments ago.
Now to take care of the other.
