"you know my families pretty rich, we own most of the land around the house and it's a preserved area so you won't have to worry about anyone else disturbing you" Macy said as she sliced some fruit on the counter top, i leaned against the island on my forearms watching her work about preparing a small lunch we would share before she left to catch the plane back home to the city.973Please respect copyright.PENANA3S5Fqmz6zt
"you'll get money put into your account each week to help supply food and get things you enjoy, maybe even check out the sights around the town, also a guy will come around in a couple days to bring you a new car so you can go on some road trips if you like, the moneys just for every day living and if you need more just email me" Macy had explained this before but she was doing so again to remind me, she seemed the type to remind people or the type who spent time around forgetful people, then again her husband was a doctor who specialized in disabilities and they fostered a lot of children like that too, i really liked this family, they were kind, selfless and accepting, some of the greatest traits a single person could have.973Please respect copyright.PENANA0O7q2FusAO
"is that pineapple" Mercer stepped up beside me, placing his hand atop the smooth surface of the island counter "yeah, fresh too, i brought some from the city from the fruit store you love so much" Macy replied, i turned my head to look him over as he reached over to take a small slice off the tray and pop it in his mouth, he had a look of delight as he chewed on the piece.
"now i know verbal communication is a key factor with a blind person so it's gonna be a little harder for the two of you, you'll have to figure something out quickly" Macy reminded me yet again, i knew it would be difficult, she warned me the first time we met at that cafe, she said she'd met with other people already but she'd been most interested in me, she told me since i couldn't speak she was a little worried i'd find it difficult looking after Mercer but as i'd assured her in writing i was quick at adapting to different situations, after spending a few days getting to know her i'd been a little surprised that she ended up picking me for the job and not a professional who had all the degrees for caring for someone else.973Please respect copyright.PENANAhz5RdU5wD7
a tap on the table snapped me from my thoughts and i blinked before looking at Mercer, he'd tapped his knuckles down against the granite counter "one for no, twice for yes, loud enough so i can hear and just tap my arm if you're beside me, i'll try to only say things that require a yes or no" Mercer seemed to be onto it, maybe he got that from when i tapped his arm earlier.
glancing at my own hand i balled into a fist and tapped the counter twice, Mercer smiled brighter "good, we'll figure out other things as we go, i'm used to the quiet but making a little noise when you are doing things would help for me to tell where you are exactly" he was definitely onto it, i could make noises, i was good at adapting as i'd told Macy, and it wasn't like i was supposed to take full care of him, he knew how to do things on his own, his parents just didn't want him living alone in the middle of no where so they'd had his sister hire a new person when June decided to retire, their parents sounded like very busy people if they couldn't spare time to see to their blind sons well being.973Please respect copyright.PENANAgrMw2o2ajX
"now, since it's almost always sunny around here the table's outside but when it's raining you can bring the table under the patio and zip down the enclosures" i had noted the patio could be closed off to keep the doors open, that was rather handy for a rainy day "come on, lets go sit in the garden" Macy picked up the tray of fruits and headed for the garden, humming as she went.
i watched Mercer hurry after her, i pressed away from the counter and followed closely, outside down a different, short stone path was a grassy area with a varnished round wooden table that seated four, it was a nice little area and it smelt pleasant with it being surrounded by the flowers.
"you know how to feed him right" Macy asked as i took the third seat at the table, i shrugged my shoulders in response to her question so she reached over to grasp Mercer's hand and direct it to the food "Apple, Pineapple, Orange" she said each as she touched his fingers to the food piles, so i would have to direct him to each item then, it didn't sound hard at all.
"i know he's twenty five years old but he's not allowed to many sweets in a single day, mum's rules" Macy sounded amused and annoyed by this but clearly wasn't the type to disobey her parents, not much anyway "alcohol is definitely off limits too, last time he got drunk he fell over a table and broke mum's favorite vase" she added although Mercer smirked and winked at me as if to say he didn't exactly obey that little rule.
"listen out for him in the bath too, sometimes he puts clothes on the wrong way so he might need help with that, he's not allowed knives or going anywhere out of the house or garden by himself, if i think of anything else i'll text you or Mercer will put in a reminder" Macy explained.
i watched the woman get up from her seat, picking up an apple slice as she leaned in to press a kiss to Mercer's cheek "be good, i gotta go if i wanna catch my plane, good luck by the way Argo, i'll keep in touch, i usually call in once a week and you never know, mum and dad might decide to drop in some day" she said, giving a wave of her hand as she walked off back into the house.
"Macy said you were twenty six, looking for a fresh start" Mercer spoke up as soon as Macy was gone, he seemed to only be eating the pineapple but he acted as if it were his favorite kind of fruit so it was obvious why, i tapped the table top twice "i came out here to find some peace, the city became too much, to many people fawning over me, i had to make a deal with my parents, somewhere safe and quiet with one caretaker of Macy's choosing" he seemed happy this was where he was now, i wanted to ask him how it had happened, when it had happened, things Macy hadn't told me and i hadn't asked her, i didn't think it was right to ask anyone besides Mercer, it was his business.973Please respect copyright.PENANAlHte44gqyf
"this is going to be strange, not having someone speaking back to me, but i'm sure we'll get along fine, if Macy chose you then i trust you'll make a good friend" Mercer seemed so sure of it and i guess i could trust him to trust me, i was quiet and i knew i tended to be distant but out here i'd have to find company and Mercer would be that company as i would be his.
