Mercers fingers ran gently over the braille, my eyes followed his hand as he turned the next page of his book, i was slumped over the coffee table seated on the floor while he was sitting quietly on the sofa, it was cold outside with the rain pouring down, the only sound in the house as everything else was completely quiet, i'd done the dishes and the washing as well as made up the beds upstairs so there wasn't much else to do until lunch.
my fingers tapped lightly against the table top as i continued to watch Mercer while considering what i should do until i had to make lunch, a thought came to mind rather quickly and i was on my feet before i could allow myself to go against my own idea, my feet led me upstairs where i scrounged through my belongings to pull out my pencil case and a drawing pad.
Mercer was still exactly where i left him only a minute ago and i set my pad of paper and the pencil case down on the coffee table, my book was filled with sketches of all kinds of places, people and things so i had to go through over half of it to find a blank page, removing a sharpened pencil and my trusty eraser from my rugged looking pencil case.
pencil touched paper and i allowed my hand to move of it's own accord while my eyes darted to Mercer and then back down at the paper as shapes began to appear and take form, i had loved drawing for longer then i could remember, it gave me a sense of freedom to allow my mind to wander and capture all the beautiful things in life, it allowed me to express my emotion where i couldn't do so through verbal explanation and i knew through many compliments on my work that i was damn good at it.
my eyes lifted to view Mercer again and it didn't take me a second to realize he'd stopped reading, his eyes were closed as his hand had fallen still on the braille of his book, i could tell by his breathing that he wasn't asleep but instead simply listening to whatever it was that had captured his attention so thoroughly.747Please respect copyright.PENANA4sUAG0SEQp
my pencil stopped tracing over the paper as a loud rumble came from the sky although muffled by the walls of the heated home that surrounded us, i watched with a breathless gaze as a smile fell across my charges face, it felt brighter then the flash that lit up the room after the lights suddenly went out before being followed by another loud rumble of thunder as if the gods, whoever they were, fought in a match of dominance that no mortal would ever bare witness to.
"i love the sound of thunder" Mercer spoke after another loud rumble drew across the sky "it reminds me of when i was little, i would stand out in the rain and watch it fall, before i lost my sight" Mercer sounded sad upon recalling that memory and i felt truly sorry for him, he hadn't always been like this, he gradually lost his sight over a years time and there was no telling if he'd ever be able to see again, he was lucky though, at least he could remember what the world looked like where as i had never even heard the sound of my own voice, i'd be lying if i said i hadn't yearned to be able to speak but i'd also be lying if i said now that Mercer's heavenly voice wasn't enough for me, i could listen to him talk for the rest of my life and never grow tired of it.747Please respect copyright.PENANA10ySL2QxW1
"i wish i could see the world like you did" i lowered my gaze at his words, he wouldn't want to see my black and white world, it lost it's color a long time ago even though recently i'd started to see a little color just by coming here and meeting him, he might be blind but he had such a way of seeing the world that i couldn't help but be mesmerized by him, and i had only met him yesterday, it was funny really, how one person could make you think differently in such a short amount of time with no effort at all.
Mercer opened his eyes and i watched him as he closed his book, rising from his seat to place his book back on the shelf where it belonged "i'll be in my room" he said before he left me in the dark living room by myself, i released a small sigh as i looked down at the paper in front of my and gently ran my fingers over the well developed portrait sketch, i didn't know what i was supposed to do right now, the thudding of my heart sounded louder then it had ever been and since i first laid eyes on him i could barely breath, i didn't know what i was feeling so i didn't know how to put it to paper, then deep down, i didn't want this feeling to go away.
