❝ I like you,❞
The twelve year old version of him had told her as he looked at her. She had smiled at his words as she led him to a more secluded area.
But that area hadn't actually been secluded. If anything, it was an open space as many people had surrounded him after she had replied, adding to the embarrassment that he already felt from her words:
❝You're such a loser.
No-one would ever like you.
You're so ugly.❞
Those were the words that a twelve year old version of the woman before him had told him ten years ago when he had attempted to confess his feelings for her.
Sure he hadn't been the most attractive twelve year old boy with his over-sized glasses and braces but she didn't have to go out of her way to remind him of how much of a loser he was—he already knew that. With everyone around him constantly reminding him of how unattractive he was, he would have known.
He finally took a sip of his lukewarm coffee and watched her as with trembling hands, she placed her mug on the coaster.
"Marc—"
"Don't apologize, I won't accept it."
"But I'm sorry."
"If you were truly sorry, you would have apologized ten years ago. Not now that we've met again."
He stood up and noticed her stand up too as he once again wrapped his scarf around his neck before finally leaving the cafe.
He drove home without paying attention to the speed limit. All he knew was that he had to get as far away from her as possible.
He had to get as far away as he could before he was reminded of how much she had made him into the person that he was today.
