VI
The next day, he found himself remembering the vibrant red of her lipstick; the way that her lips turned up when she smiled, causing wrinkles to form around her eyes.
He subconsciously placed his hand on his chest as he felt his heart beating quickly suddenly.
What was happening to him? he wondered.
The sound of his phone vibrating caught him off-guard, causing him to flinch where he sat on his couch. He reached towards the coffee table and picked up his phone to find a message from her.
"Hey," he read the message aloud. For a moment, his fingers moved on their own in an attempt to reply. But just as he reached for the send button he stopped himself.
What was he doing?
Replying to that message meant allowing her back into his life even if it was just a little bit. And after what had happened in the past, he didn't want to risk having her in his life any more than he needed to.
All he needed from her was for her to be his date for the party and that was all; nothing more and nothing less.
He heaved a sigh as he locked his phone and placed it back where it lay on the table before. And just as he placed it on the table, the phone vibrated again. Once again, he picked it up.
1730: I'm at the cafe where we met. I know that you don't like seeing me any more than you need to. But I just feel like I need to do more to make it up to you after what I did to you
He stared at that message, unsure of what to do; whether to reply or not. He didn't realize how long he had been staring at the screen until the phone vibrated once again
1745: If you'll accept my offer, come to the cafe. I'll stay there until I see you
1746: Even if it means staying until they close...
He continued to look at the screen. Although his mind was yelling at him to ignore the messages, constantly reminding him of what she had done all those years ago, he couldn't ignore the feeling that filled him.
The feeling of hope; hope that her words might actually be genuine.
Before he could stop himself, his legs carried him to his room. He quickly changed out of his pyjamas and grabbed a jacket. Walking towards the door, he picked up his phone and car keys along the way.
He walked quickly to his car and started it, backing out of his parking spot and driving towards the cafe.

Within minutes, he arrived at the cafe. But no matter how hard he willed himself to get out of the car, all he could do was look at her through the window as she sat at the spot they had sat just a few days ago, her hands wrapped around a mug.
He noticed a smile on her lips as she looked down at the mug before taking a sip.
And for a moment, he allowed himself to acknowledge the fact that she was truly beautiful. Even after all these years of hating her, he couldn't deny that she had grown into a beautiful woman.
The feeling of his lips turning into a smile forced him to stop his trail of thoughts.
No, he wouldn't do that.
He would allow her into his life any more than he needed to.
He had to remember that.
After spending several minutes in the car, he finally got out and walked to the cafe. As soon as he opened the door, she looked at him and waved to him. His hand went up and waved at her as he smiled. But the moment he realized what he was doing, he stopped himself, causing his smile to disappear.
He solemnly walked towards her and sat down when he was close enough.
"So why did you call me out so late?" he asked her, his eyes focusing on the mug in her hands.
"Don't you want something to drink first? Coffee, black?"
"No."
There was a moment of silence between them as he pushed away the warm feeling that came with her remembering what he liked to order.
"Why did you need to see me today?" he asked her once the silence had grew too thick for him to handle. He lifted his head to see her looking at him with a large smile.
"I want to go ice skating--with you."
