“Tonight, we are here to commemorate...”
Tears prick my eyes and I tune out his name. I wipe my eyes with the back of my hand, nearly dropping the floating lantern balanced in my arms. Hundreds of lanterns float into the starry night sky simultaneously, but I hesitate. When I release this, I will officially let go of my brother’s soul. Maybe, just maybe, it will find its way to him, over mountains and through clouds. Maybe he will see it and know it’s from me.
I reach up to the sky—to him—and let go.
