What have I done?
I should've just went back home when Jesse said so. I should've just persisted and stayed home altogether. I shouldn't have done all the things that I did that led to this moment. Now I was going to die. One because the cut that Haze's follower gave to me was starting to sting. Two, I left my mothers car at a random intersection with a bunch of armed gang members and as if that wasn't enough I was on a motorbike going at an unbelievable speed to absolutely nowhere.
"I don't like this," I heard behind me.
It was Jesse. He was holding onto my shoulders and I could see that his right hand had a bright red bruise on it.
"You think I do? My mother's car is in the hands of Haze so I'm already practically dead," I yelled into the air as I turned to an intersection that looked somewhat familiar.
"I meant sitting behind you like this, but yeah that too."
I rolled my eyes and kept turning at every intersection that looked familiar until I found myself on the Main Street of our town.
I let out a breath of relief but saw that the fuel was low on the motorcycle. I drove to the nearest gas station with the help of jesses instructions and hopped off.
I looked around at what the others were doing because once again I had no idea what I was doing. I copied the old man with a Harley beside me and put the nozzle in the tank and waited. I took that time to lean on the gas pump and relax.
Jesse was still sitting on the motorbike and his clothes were ragged and he had some buttons popped off, his hair was Windswept to the side from the ride and he almost looked just like one of Haze's followers. Even his expression matched. His jaws were clinched and his blue eyes were focused on the neon light of the bar across the road while he massaged his right hand.
"Where did you learn how to do that?" I asked and indicated my head to his hand.
He jerked his head to me as if he had forgotten I was there.
" Oh, um movies I guess," his eyes darted away from me just as quickly.
He was hiding something.
"Where did you learn to do this?" He pointed to the bike.
"Beginners luck I guess," I said as I grabbed the nozzle out of the tank. He probably had his suspicions but If he wanted to hide things, so could I.
He eyed me skeptically and I pretended I didn't notice until I started to feel uncomfortable.
"What?!" I said as I turned around to meet his gaze.
To my surprise, he was smiling. Braces and all.
"Why are you smiling," I asked
"We are fucked," he said as he looked around as if he couldn't believe what was happening.
He started chucking which lead to a quiet laugh.and I wanted to cuss him out for acting like a madman embarrassing me but I found my self laughing too.
I thought about how this day went from a dull ride in a moving truck to this. He was right we were in deep shit and we were confused and we were scared so we laughed. Our laughs mingled with the loud sound of chatter around the street and the bustling cars in the nighttime. It was the kind of laughter that came out of nowhere but made your stomach hurt in a good way.
We probably would've stayed there laughing like we had just discovered the funniest joke known to mankind if a car hadn't pulled up behind us and horned at us. I flipped him off and pointed to the six other pumps around us.
"You know that's not how it works right" he said with a ghost of a smile on his face.
"He'll figure it out."
I was about to go inside to pay for the gas when Jesse went rigid. I got paranoid and looked his way thinking it was Haze and his crew only to see a dark haired girl coming out of the car a few stations beside us.
"What the fuck Jesse you scared me," I said a little too loud.
The girl faced our way and her dark eyes landed on Jesse. It was hard to tell what Nationality she was. Probably mixed with Asian and had on sweatpants and an oversized hoodie. She wants even trying and she still looked adorable. Her face lit up to reveal an even cuter smile and my face seems to be doing the exact opposite of hers for some reason.
"Hi Jay" she waved at Jesse.
Jesse who probably only ever had human contact with his immediate family went a faint shade of red.
"Hi Zoe Lee," he said with a wave.
She smiled again and went to the convenience store attached.
I practically cringed with my full body and turned to Jesse.
"You said her full name," I said unbelievably.
"Shut up and go pay for the gas," he replied.
"And she didn't even know your name," I teased back.
He glared at me and I smiled and started to sing quietly as I walked backwards to the store.
"Jesse and Zoe Lee sittin in a tree,"
He looked like he was trying to hold in a laugh when he said,
"Yeah Cammie, real mature,"

When we were almost home, all the fun and jokes stopped to a deadly silence.
We were both over the shock now and had come to the realization for the third time that day that we're fucked.
"What's your mom gonna do," Jesse asked me.
I couldn't admit that she would be beyond angry and send me "Back to Cuba" and take away all my privileges and rights including the basic human ones. So I just told him that she would ground me.
I was building up the courage to tell my mother a parent-friendly version of what had happened while I parked the motorbike a few blocks away.
I was laughing 30 minutes ago but all I wanted to do now was run away to Canada, change my name to Becky and sell maple syrup on the streets or something.
"It's gonna be fine Cammie, I'll come with you," he said.
"No, you'll go home" I ordered
"Then I'll walk you to the door?"
I didn't give him an answer and started making my way to our two-story home. The lights were on in Teo's room and I could see his silhouette standing by the window and talking on the phone. My mother's office lights were on too Which meant I had time to make a good excuse with Teo.
Jesse was still behind me "walking me to my door" more like escorting me to my death.
"I know the directions to my house thank you very much,"
I looked behind me but he was looking ahead of me. Standing in front of my garage door was a face I thought I'd never see again.
"Oh god Cam, you went from me to him?" his voice was just as I had remembered, deep and amused.
"Talk about a downgrade,"
