A world is born when another ends. Bree heard her grandfather say this many times but she couldn't believe it. Certainly, the universe is vast and unknown to the human race and no one can possibly know what happens when one world disappears. Dorian, the god who followed her ever since she turned fourteen, agreed with her grandfather and continuously talked her ears off about the philosophy behind it.
Especially since she turned eighteen and her grandfather passed away.
From that moment on, Dorian was a constant in her life and nothing she said or did could make him return to his realm. Gods, she found, were entirely too stubborn for their own good. He was being extremely insistent that morning, before the world began to collapse.
“I don’t care if the other gods say that another world is born when one is destroyed, Dorian, because it won’t happen,” she said as she brought the milk out of the fridge.
“Just because you live a peaceful life does not mean it will stay that way forever,” Dorian started to snap back but his eyes glazed over.
“Kill me now,” Bree groaned as he brought up the topic again.
“Look out, Bree!” he cried and wrapped his glowing arms around her as the world outside her apartment imploded.
Multiple things crossed her mind but at that moment, the feeling of being in a god's embrace was so overwhelming that she couldn't think straight. 770Please respect copyright.PENANAZJo0K5HxGf
Now, we must understand that it isn't her fault; gods have this affect on mortal beings and she is taking it considerably well compared to others.
“Oh my gods, what is going on?” she shrieked when she could form a proper sentence. People, the size of ants from where she and Dorian were floating, ran helplessly for shelter as buildings collapsed around them.
Quickly, still holding her close, Dorian explained what her role in the universe was while he encased them in a bubble.
“Random gods just decided that I would be saved from this world’s destruction so I could be part of the next one?” she whispered, still shocked by the disappearance of Earth.
“Soon, we will arrive in a world where magic is acceptable and is used daily even though they are missing you, their Chosen One.”
“That reminds me of Harry Potter and I am no Chosen One!”
“Utopianism is threatening to reign over their world and you must join forces with the other high-powers in order to stop it, if you want to survive this ordeal.”
Very slowly, Bree bashed her head against Dorian’s chest and pinched his arm just to make sure she wasn't dreaming. While she did so, Dorian gestured for her to look at the new world that formed where Earth used to be.
“Xenophobia is common so you must learn to adapt to their world quickly but you needn't worry; I will be there with you but you must do the work.”
“...You have to tell me what my chances of surviving are if I don’t succeed, Dorian...”
“…Zero,” he said, looking her straight in the eye before their foreheads touched and her vision blackened.
