"There's no way I'm going to find Father on this mountain," Nadine muttered. She walked away from the storm that was coming in.
She last saw Father in a large crowd when they had tickets to board a plane. This was almost 4 years ago. The airport was so crowded that they had lost each other. She assumed her father boarded the plane without her. But she knew he had to, because her town was a dangerous place.257Please respect copyright.PENANAw2S7ZPfbh5
It'd been over a day since she walked. She had gone from town to town, river to river. She did not get lost easily, even without a map. But she was sick. She just wanted to go home.257Please respect copyright.PENANAFD94TINs1l
She clutched at her side. There were sharp cramps on her left side every few minutes. Her father was a doctor. If only they had not gotten separated, he could've taught her what this sharp pain was and how to fix it.257Please respect copyright.PENANAV6iGK9YSI8
"Father!" Nadine cried out raggedly. It was a waste of her voice. There were hardly any trees or anything to block someone. She knew he wasn't here.
But she wanted to feel hope. "Father! Father, where are you?" A sharp pain sprang through her side again. She moaned. Then she looked up to see the clouds. She couldn't escape the storm. The ocean was gradually getting fiercer. 257Please respect copyright.PENANAomqJdasrYI
Suddenly, she tripped on a sharp rock. She yelped and fell forward.
Was I going to die?
But there was a shrub below on a rocky surface, surrounded by sticks and wet leaves. If they weren't there, surely she would've have fell and drowned in the ocean.257Please respect copyright.PENANA0VUrhkSAhy
She tried to carry herself up with all her might. She searched for the longest stick she had and anchored herself. But the stick wasn't strong enough.
A sharp pain pricked her side again. She screamed out of anger.257Please respect copyright.PENANAKxyQ4YidiO
Nadine had not made any progress. She couldn't find her father. She was stuck on a cliff and almost died. She was in the middle of a storm.
Then, she had an idea.
She took off her shoe. It was her mother's, but her father gifted it to her. It was really strong. Anyone who walked in those shoes could walk for miles without getting tired.
She used the shoe as a hammer and hit the rocks with it, until it was broken enough for her to climb on top of it.
It took many tries, but she saw people on TV do it before. So she kept trying. For her father.
She broke the rocks steep enough for her to climb on top. But she had to hurry and climb because the storm was getting worse.
"Faster," she told herself. Her hands were sweaty, but she could feel herself getting to the top.257Please respect copyright.PENANA08IYvGm4ry
She knew she made it when she felt the sticks on top of the cliff and the rock that she had tripped on. She put her shoe back on. When she looked down behind her, she saw the rocks broke. It couldn't carry any more weight after she had climbed on them. She was relieved she survived.
Then she drank a few sips of the water in her bag and kept going with her search. She was determined to find her father more than ever.
