I sighed with content. School had finally ended, along with all of the drama, and now I had three months of a great job ahead of me. Our local public pool was always busy, making being a lifeguard much more interesting. Today was sunny and supposed to be warm, which I was happy about. The rainy, overcast days were not much excitement.
I headed over to the sign in sheet and wrote my name down for my shift. It was 8:30 in the morning, but I didn't mind being up a little early. My brother who's a senior, would disagree. He'd say that twelve pm is the perfect wake up time. What a dork.
Marie, who ran the place, greeted me with a smile. "Hey Cleo, heard the weathers gonna be real nice today. We'll get lots of patrons."
I laughed. "Well, I'll just have to be at the top of my game.”325Please respect copyright.PENANALHxEPBDfIU
"I hope so," Marie said with a wink. "I do need you to do some maintenance though, the back rooms need organizing and the cover of the pool needs to be rolled off."
“On it," I replied dutifully.325Please respect copyright.PENANAsaEtxn6WsX
As I worked on the back rooms, organizing pool noodles and the lost and found, my mind started to wander.
"I wonder how tan I'll get... I should sort through my old swimsuits... do we have any ice cream at home..?
Remember Cory?"
I groaned inwardly. Cory had been my crush ever since the start of this year, freshman year, that is. Of course, he liked another girl, one WAY prettier than me. They never dated, luckily, but every time I saw them together... it was like my heart was being crushed with every emotion I had in me. Cory was everything I've ever looked for in a guy. Sweet, mature, polite, sense of humor, great eyes...325Please respect copyright.PENANAfzeKvEH7Jr
I shook my head and told myself to knock it off. I do not need the distraction right now. I have a great job and I shouldn’t waste my time thinking about him.325Please respect copyright.PENANArRuEWW1vvT
I finished with the organizing, then headed over to take the pool cover off. I could really see my muscles coming in, after months of working out. I looked at the water, hoping my light brown hair wouldn't get too damaged from the sun and chlorine..
9:00 is when the little kids had their swim lessons that I taught. I took off my black shorts and stepped in to the slightly warm water, thankful for the pool heater. The kids started showing up, and after a while I started the lesson.
Joey, my favorite kid, was really showing improvement. After the class, I went to talk to his mom about possible private lessons.
"Hi," I shook her hand, "I'm Cleo Lancaster, the swim instructor and lifeguard here. Your son Joey is really showing some potential. I would consider a few private lessons and maybe swim team?"
"Oh really? Well I'm glad! You can call me Stephany. Do you have any openings for him?"325Please respect copyright.PENANAFe3o0PVm7I
“I’ll talk to my boss to get you the closest option we have," I said with a smile. "Well I have to get back to work, now to meet you Stephany.” This part of my job was always enjoyable. Helping kids grow in their love for swimming and seeing their parents cheer them on.
After that, I started lifeguard work. I sat in my tall chair with my aviator sunglasses on, in my red swimsuit feeling super cool. I played with the whistle around my neck, watching the people play in the water.
