The weekend had ended, and began another week of swimming lessons for the kids. After a few group ones, Joey was scheduled to have a private with me.
I kept thinking about that girl I gave CPR. Was she ok? Did I do enough?
I had to get out of my head. If I hadn’t of been there she surely wouldn’t have lived. I took a deep breath of the warm summer air and calmed myself down.
I saw Joey run up to the gate and fling it open. Then I saw someone else follow him in. Cory? Why was he here? Where was joey’s mom?
“Hi Cleo! Can I get in the shallow end?”
”U-uh, Sure kid, I’ll be right there.” I stuttered. The lifeguard was still on duty, I would never leave a kid in the pool by themselves.
”Cory, what are you doing here?”
He scratched the back of his neck. “I drove him. Just got my license and our mom said I could.”
”Joey’s your brother?” I said shocked.
”Yeah. Uh, hey, I wanted to say thank you for saving Jess at the party. She’s a family friend, I don’t know what we woulda done if you weren’t there.”
”No worries. It was a good thing I came.” I said unemotionally. I wouldn’t say I was happy to see him. He kissed a girl, which made me feel hurt somehow, even though he isn’t mine. I guessed I’ve moved on. Seen the real Cory. A player. Did he even remember the girl he liked at school? Or was she just another pawn in Cory’s game.
I walked over to the pool as Cory called out to Joey, “I’ll pick you up when it’s over.” The two brothers were so different. Joey is sweet and innocent, Cory is arrogant and flaky. At least now I see it.
After lessons, which went well, Me and a few other lifeguards we’re going to meet the new tennis coach on our break.
“Cmon Cleo! I heard he’s really hot,” Ashlyn called and Lucy yelled out an “hell yea he is,” in agreement.
”Please? Hotter than me?” Devin commented, flexing his biceps.
”I don’t doubt that he is,” I said laughing as He shot me a fake pained look. To be fair, we all looked our best right now. Tan and fit from hard work in the sun.
We talked and laughed like this the whole way into the indoor tennis court, greeting Steven, the main coach before we saw the new guy.
Wow.
He was hot. Really good looking. He had slightly darker skin with even darker curly hair. He was tall and strong looking. I froze for a second when he came up to me and asked my name.
”This is Cleo.” Lucy answered for me.
”Oh, sorry, yeah. I’m Cleo. That’s me.” I shook his hand. A little too hard.
He laughed. “I’m Brody. That’s me.” And shook my hand back.
Im pretty sure I turned beet red when he smiled at me. No, get it together. This is a coworker. A hot one, but still
”Oh cool! Can I call you bro for short?” Devin asked giving him a high five.
Brody laughed at that one. “Sure dude, whatever you want.”
”Hey, we were gonna get drinks at the snack bar during our break, wanna join?” Asked Lucy, and I was a little mad I didn’t think about asking him that. He agreed happily after Steven gave the ok, and we all left.
I gotta say, he’s as nice as he is hot. He is really fun to talk to…
“Whoa you saved a girl with CPR?” Brody asked impressed. I must’ve missed some of the conversation.
”Oh yeah, at a party. Wasn’t anything special, it’s what lifeguards are trained for.”
”That’s awesome. I’m sure she’s really grateful you were there.” He smiled at me.
Maybe this summer would take a turn for the better after all.
