Once Upon a Time.... there was a little house on a hill. There was a poor, small family living in the little house. There was little boy named Nile that was so sick, and he had a condition that made him not able to walk at all. It was Monday, and a man named Dr. Peter knocked on the door. The pregnant mother answered the door with tears running down her dirty cheeks because she was so happy to see someone willing to help her kids get better. The doctor said, “When was the last time your family ate?’’ The mother said, “Not since Saturday.” The doctor was so surprised to hear her say that his heart started to beat fast, and his hands and feet started to shake. When he started to calm down, he asked if he could check the kids. The mother said, “YES!” When the doctor finished checking the kids and the father, he started to check the mother and all the sudden he paused. Then he said, “You need to go to the hospital now, the baby is dying in your stomach!” So, the mother told the kids to stay with their father and be good. A whole month passed by. When the mom, baby and Dr. Peter finally came to the little house, the kids were so happy when they saw their baby sister giggling and smiling. The mom asked the second oldest where Nile was, and she said that he has been crying everyday sense she left because he was scared for his mom and for the baby. The mother went upstairs to find Nile in bed she said, “Nile your baby sister is here, and her name is Mia.’’ Nile’s mom carried him down the stairs to the kitchen. Nile said, “Hi little sis, I am Nile your big brother.” Nile looked at his mom she started to cry. Nile looked confused and scared. The mother said, “This is a different baby; our baby has a nasal cannula to see if he will breathe at all.” Nile said, “Can I see our baby, and how did you get Mia?” “Well,” said the mom. I was in the delivery room when a doctor came in and said that our baby was not going to make it. After he left a lady walked in with a baby girl in her arms. Tears ran down her cheeks and she had a patient outfit on. She said to me that I needed to take her baby girl …. I did not know what to say, but before she left, she explained everything to me about her fifteen kids she had to take care of. So do you understand what I am saying Nile.” Nile said, “Yes and now can we see the baby.” So, the mother nodded, yes. When they got to the hospital room where the baby was, Nile looked in to see a little ill baby boy trying his best to stay alive. Nile looked at the baby till he could not look anymore. He looked at his mother and said, “We could have said yes to that rich president and stayed at his house and our baby would be well and not ill.” Dr. Peter said, “What ….” The mother said, “My husband use to work for a man named Miles Lone and that man’s boss was the president so Miles told the president that my family needed a better house so the president called us and asked us if we wanted to stay at his house that he owns ….FOREVER ….well... I kindly said no to him.” Dr. Peter looked a little upset, but he understood that their house had been passed down generations and it was meant to be in their family. The mother said, “Can we take the baby, Dr. Peter so the kids can see him?” Dr. Peter said with a gentle voice, “I already asked, and they said it’s too risky for the baby.” The mother slowly walked to see her baby boy for the last time. She said to the baby with a soft voice. “See you in heaven my little angel baby.’’ When they got home to the little house where the father and kids where they saw that the dad and kids were so happy, but the doctor, Nile and the mother were sad. The dad ran to the mom and said, “I got a job …I really got a job again.” The mother put a small grin on her face and then asked “Well... what is this job you are so happy about? “The dad said, “Ok, this may sound like a bad job but is not, I have enlisted in the army, and I am going to be working with a man named John and he will be helping our family with bills and food …. ok honey.” The mother looked at her husband and said, “That is not ok, I can’t lose you like my father.” When she looked down to the floor Nile was looking right at her. The father said, “I need to go …. honey it is the only way to help our family. God will be with me every step of the way remember that ok.” The mother nodded her head but she tried to hold her tears back so the kids would not be scared for their father when it came time for him to leave. Nile said, “For you daddy.” Nile stood up and took two steps and then fell to the ground. The dad was in shock that his 9-year-old son just took two steps just for him. Nile had a big smile on his face and said, “Be safe daddy and remember me.” The dad said, “Always my little one.” Then unexpectedly Nile started singing a song that was a special song to his dad. Nile’s dad had tears in his eyes because his father sang that song to him when he went too far away places to tell the Gospel and go to war. Nile said, “Grandpa sang that song right before he died.” Nile’s dad hugged him and whispered in his hear, “I will always remember you.” After Nile’s dad hugged him, he went to the kitchen to eat the food that Dr. Peter had bought for them earlier that day. When they all sat down, they realized that someone was missing, it was Sofia. The mom started panicking and saying, “We need to call Dr. Peter now!” They called Dr. Peter and he told them that he was going to start looking for Sofia, 5 minutes past and Peter found Sofia at the train station talking to a very well-dressed stranger. As Dr. Peter observed from a distance, not taking his eyes off of her he called the family to tell them he had found her, he walked up to her and said, “Sorry to interrupt your little adventure, but your parents are worried sick because you left without telling anyone.” Sofia said in her sweet 6-year-old voice “I got $10,000 from the president for helping his daughter that had an eating disorder welcomed into our school program for kids with health problems .” Peter was amazed at Sofia’s kindness. Peter immediately ran to the telephone and called her mom. Peter said, “Your daughter just got $10,000 from the president even though you guys rejected his kind offer.” The mother was so happy to hear the news and glad that her daughter was safe. The mother asked, “Where are you, I want to thank the president?” Peter said, “I am at the train station watching Sofia talk to the president.” The mother walked as fast as she could until she saw Peter and waved her arms in the air. When the mother got to Peter, she was out of breath. Peter pointed to Sofia and the president talking. The mother ran as fast as she could then she said, “I was worried sick, oh and thank you so much Mr. President for the money and really you don’t have to give my daughter money for doing something kind.” The president said, “I am doing it because your daughter did it out of the kindness of her heart, she deserved this, and I still would love to help your family.” The mother was so thankful. After the president and Peter left the mother walked back home with Sofia. When they got home, they noticed that dad was starting to pack to leave for his new job with the army the next day. Mother told Sofia to eat with her siblings in the kitchen. The mother hid the money behind her back and walked up to her husband and said, “Our daughter Sofia got us something to help the family.” The dad looked happy but really confused. He said, “Is it more beds from the homeless help shelter?” The mom said, “$10,000!” The dad picked the mom up and swung her around, he was so happy that his daughter has a kind heart just like his wife. The dad finished packing when all the kids were fast asleep in their warm small beds. The dad and mom got out their Bible and prayed. Then they went to bed in their nice warm bed. It was Tuesday, the dad started putting on his suit and mom was in the kitchen early to make her husband nice, healthy breakfast to eat. Father finished his breakfast and was about to walk out the door when his second oldest came down the small stairs caring Nile in her arms, “Nile said that he wanted to say bye to dad one last time.” “Goodbye” said Nile, as he watched his father walk out the door. Mother looked at father and said, “Goodbye honey and be careful” “I will see you soon” he started walking to the doctor’s car. When the car drove down the driveway, he looked back to see Nile watching him and waving goodbye. He began to wonder if he was doing the right thing. He did not know what he really had ahead of him and began to wonder how it would want to go into the army during the possibility of war, but he knew that God was with him. When he arrived at the base memories came flooding back of when as a young child, he had gone to say goodbye to his father a long time ago.
Meanwhile, Dr. Peter came back to the house to talk to their mother, “I need to talk with your mother Sofia.” Sofia pointed to the little kitchen where the mother was planning what she and her kids were going to eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The mother said, “Hello doctor, what brings you back to the house?” The doctor said, “I spoke to a lady that is very rich and she wants to send Nile to a hospital where he can receive treatment for his legs with physical therapy, he will need to leave immediately so we can get him started on the therapy.” Mother smiled, “I don’t think it will work, but we can try and tell that lady thank you for her generosity and kindness.” “I will,” said the doctor disappointed, and said goodbye and left.
Nile was in his bed and reading a book called Love and Kindness. He would read when he was in his bed. The mother told the second oldest to get Nile out of his bed so they could go to the market for the first time. The kids got their small coats and walked out the door. When Nile was being carried by one of his sisters and the mother held Sofia because her head hurts. When they got to the market everyone was staring at them because they were poor people, but that did not stop their family from buying food there. They bought apples, corn, fruits, and lots of vegetables. When they got home after shopping for a whole hour Peter came looking for Nile so that he could start therapy right away. Peter found Nile in his bed reading a book and looking out the window waiting till his father came back. Peter said, “Nile, I need you to come with me because I have something very special for you at the hospital.” Nile lifted himself up and said, “Is it therapy because I want to do it now?” Peter nodded his head yes with a big smile on his face. So, Peter helped Nile pack his bag because he was going to have to stay there for 1 week or less. After they finished packing Dr. Peter lifted Nile with all his might and carried him out the door.216Please respect copyright.PENANAmF3p7DidLK

Nile and the doctor were in the hospital room that Nile was going to stay in. Nile was surprised at all the things he saw in the room. A lady with a white robe came in the room and she said, “Hi Nile, my name is Summer, and I will be helping you with therapy and going to places here that you want to go to.” Nile already liked Summer because she looked kind and fun. The doctor told Nile to push the green button if he needs him and to push the red if you need Summer. Nile understood perfectly so the doctor and summer left Nile alone so he could get used to his mom not being there every step. Nile was about to get something from his small bag when he heard summer walking in the room, so he quickly got his covers on him and laid there. Summer said, “Are you ready Nile for therapy in a room with lots of other kids?” Nile nodded his head yes and they went to room B- 3. When they got in the room Nile could not believe his eyes because he saw kids like him being carried around because they had weak legs. Summer took Nile next to a kid named Alexander, but they call him Alex for short. Summer said, “Nile this is Alex, and he has lost one of his legs because he was in a fire saving a little baby girl that was 1 year old.” Nile wanted to be his friend the moment he heard he lost his leg. Alex said, “Hi Nile, I am 9 and in 4th grade.” Nile said, “So am I, and how long are you staying here?” Alex said, “For two months I think, but you will like it here. They have video games and lots of food and water and ice cream!” Nile said, “I have never played video games or had ice cream.” Alex paused ….and said nothing because he has never met a kid that poor before, but he still did not care if he was poor, he just wanted to be his friend. So, Summer carried Nile to a wheelchair and put him in it. Nile said, “I have never been in a wheelchair before because my family could not afford an expensive wheelchair.” Summer new that he could not afford one so she said, “You can have this wheelchair, you need it because your parents are getting older, and they can’t carry you anymore.” Nile was so happy. Nile said, “How will I be able to get up my small stair?” Summer said, “It’s all taken care of and let’s start therapy now.” Nile followed Summer to small stairs she told him to stand up when she held his hand. Nile stood up and walked up and down the stairs with Summer until he could not do it anymore. Then Summer said, “Go say bye to Alex then you can go rest in your room.” Nile said bye to Alex, and he went to his room and took a nap for 1 hour. Back at home mother was making dinner for her kids before she put Mia to sleep. When mother was making dinner, she kept thinking how much Nile misses his dad even though he has only been gone for a while, but the mom kept making dinner. Over at the hospital Summer was making a healthy dinner for Nile when he woke up, but before she finished, she saw the red light flashing on her phone which means that Nile wants her, so she finished making his dinner and went to his room. When she saw Nile, he looked like he had a cold and wanted to eat so Summer said, “Here is your dinner Nile and we will do therapy in the morning.” Nile ate his dinner and then went to sleep. In the morning Summer woke Nile up and told him to meet her in the therapy room in 20 minutes. Nile obeyed and got his clothes and changed in is bed and got in his wheelchair and went to the room. When Nile got there, he looked everywhere but could not find Summer, so he stayed there and then he saw Alex crying in his wheelchair trying to hide himself from his therapy teacher. Nile quickly got to Alex and said, “What is wrong Alex?” Alex wiped his tears of his face and said, “I just lost my dad due to a sickness in the army.” Nile paused because he thought that his dad is next. Nile said, “My dad just went to the army, it is ok Alex.’’ Nile tried his absolute best too comfort Alex. Then Nile saw Summer, so he said, “Bye Alex.” Alex waved bye then Nile went to Summer in his wheelchair. Summer said, “There you are Nile, I have been looking everywhere.” Nile said, “Sorry, Alex was crying because he lost his dad.” “I know,” said Summer. Nile and Summer started doing therapy after Summer explained everything that has been going in in Alex’s life. When Nile was doing therapy, he learned new things and he was able to walk a little bit. Summer said, “Nile, I don’t feel the best so can we finish tomorrow?” Nile said, “oh, ok see you tomorrow then.” Summer left to her room and Nile went to talk to Alex, but he was not there. Nile thought that his therapy lesson did not finish till later tonight. So, Nile went to his room confused. Around 40 min. later he saw police, people crying and everyone surrounding summer’s room. Nile was thinking, who would surround a room like that. Nile went to one of the officers and asked them what was going on. The officer said, “Summer the worker here …. died from a heart failure. Nile was heartbroken. Nile said, “She was my best friend and my therapy teacher.” The officer looked at him and said, “If her family lets you, you can go see her.” Nile thanked the officer and went to see one of the relatives that were there. On his way Nile saw Alex crying. Nile said to himself Alex was here the whole in entire time, but I need to talk to summer’s relatives. Nile finally saw one of her relatives that looked like Summer next to summer’s door. Nile said, “Hello, my name is Nile, Summer was my therapy teacher and my best friend. Can I go in the room and see her?” The lady said, “Hi, my name is Lily, Summer was my sister and my best friend…she meant everything to me. Yes, take as much time as you want in there, but be careful.” Nile went in the room and saw Summer …he was speechless. Nile went closer to Summer then he hugged her, but not too tight. An officer came in and said, “Kid you need to get out of here because they have to take Summer’s body.” Nile dashed out in his wheelchair with tears dripping down his cheeks, he had never been this sad before over a person that he had met not that long ago. Dr. Peter came to Nile’s room and saw him crying in his hospital bed. Peter said, “What is wrong Nile, you just got here and now you’re crying.” Nile wiped his tears off his face and said, “Summer is …. dead!” Peter said, “No, she cannot be .... I …do not know what to say.” Nile said, “I can walk, and I also have a wheelchair.” Peter said, “Ok, let me call your mom and tell her that you want to leave.” Nile was happy, but sad because he liked the hospital but, he wanted to go.216Please respect copyright.PENANAXyqk2MLq0u
Peter said, “Your mom said she can’t come because she hurt her leg, so I am going to take you home in 30 minutes.” Nile was ok with that. Instead of waiting around till he was going to leave he decided to say goodbye to Alex. Nile went to the therapy room to see if Alex was there and he was so Nile went to Alex and said, “Well I guess this is goodbye.” Alex said, “Yeah, I guess so.” Nile hugged Alex. Then Nile left to see if Peter wanted to leave. Peter was talking to a lady named Sara that is new. Nile said, “So sorry, but Peter can we leave now?” Peter said, “Ok.” Peter told Sara that he would have to talk later. Peter helped Nile get his bags and they got in the car. When they finally reached the little house, everyone was so happy. Nile went inside the house to say hi to his mom. Nile said, “Hi mom I am all better and I have a wheelchair to get around the house.” The mom said, “Your father would be so proud of you and speaking of your father you have a letter from him.” Nile said, “Ok.” Nile got the letter and opened it carefully. It said, “Dear Nile, I miss you so much. I wish I could be there right now. Tell your mother I love her, and that God has helped me so much since I first arrived. I love you and be a good boy and help your mother with Sofia and Mia.”216Please respect copyright.PENANAib3SPn47BI
Love, Daddy Nile was missing his dad and wanted him to be there, but he knew that he was serving for his country. Nile told his mom what his dad said and told her about Summer and Alex. Nile decided to go outside and try to walk a little bit. Nile was trying to walk when he saw some kids that like to bully kids. They walked up to Nile and said, “Well…well if it would be that I am seeing Nile Sands in a wheelchair for lame people.” The boys laughed and hurt Nile’s feelings a lot, but Nile did not let the boys stop him. Nile said, “I got this wheelchair from my best friend Summer who died.” The boys left Nile alone. Nile would cry every time he thought about Summer or his dad. Nile’s mom called him and said, “I almost forgot that you got a letter from Summer’s mom about her funeral.” Nile was reading it and it said that he got an invitation to her funeral on Sunday. Nile was so happy that he was invited to her funeral. He told his mom about it, and she said, “You may go for a little while.” Nile said, “Thank you mom for everything.” Then he went up the stairs in a thing that helps old people go up and down the stairs even though he is not old. When Nile got in his room, he quickly got his book and started reading until his mom called him. Nile was reading a chapter called Rich in Jesus . Nile loved this chapter because it was like his house and a poor, small family lived in that house. The reason his mom called him is so that they could go to the hospital to check his mom’s leg. Nile obeyed his mom and went down the stairs in what he calls a spaceship that goes up and down. Nile’s mom said, “My legs are getting swollen, and they hurt.” Nile knew that his mom needed help so he got Mia and Sofia and his other sister and went to the hospital to look for Dr. Peter or another doctor that could help. Nile was in his wheelchair when he saw Alex. Alex saw Nile and they both went fast so they could give each other a hug. Alex said, “Nile why are you here, and it is so good to see you hear.” Nile said, “My mom has a swollen legs and we are trying to find a doctor.” Alex said, “Dr. Sam can help you; I will go get him.” Alex told Nile to wait in room A-3. Alex told Sam. Dr. Sam went in the room and said, “What is the problem with your legs?” The mom said, “I was going up the stairs and my legs popped and made a crack nose. I fell and hurt it more.” Doctor Sam said, “May I check your legs?” The mom nodded her head yes. The Dr. Sam started checking and he paused and said, “You need to have surgery today.” The mom looked scared, and she did not know how to react. Dr. Sam said, ‘’ Well, I say we get you checked in and we can figure things out. I can take ex-rays of your legs and we can go from there.’’ The mom said,’’ Whatever needs to happen to get it better. Where do I sign in?’’ Dr. Sam took a paper and pen out from his bag and handed it to the mother. She signed her name and date and handed it back to the doctor. Dr. Sam told mom that he would send in his assistant nurse to get her all checked into a better room. So, he left to get the assistant. Nile and his siblings were a little confused at what was happening so mom said, “Dr. Sam just needs me to stay in the hospital, just for a little while, and then I will be all right.” Mother’s second problem, besides her leg, was that she had no one to take care of her kids. So, she decided to call Mr. president to see if he would be able to be of any help after the nurse came in. The door opened and a red head, freckled, girl walks in with a chart in one hand and a stethoscope around her neck and says, “Hi, I am Bella, and I will be your nurse for you stay, just hop into this wheelchair and I will take you to your room.” Mother got into the wheelchair and was eye level to Nile, who was in his wheelchair too. Nile’s siblings followed behind him as they passed many hospital rooms to make it to mother’s, which was 133. As soon as they got in the room mother asked,” Hey, Bella, would there be any chance I can borrow a phone to call someone?” Bella said, “Sure!” So, mother took the phone and called Mr. president. “Hello?” said Mr. President. Mother answered with good afternoon and began to tell what was happening and how she needed a place for her kids to stay. Mr. President was so pleased that he would get to spend time with the kids, so he said yes. All mothers had to do was find a ride. Of course, mother told peter about it, and he told her that he would take them to the house. So, Peter got the kids in the car and took the kids to go to Mr. President house.
