She gasps and sits up. Her hand clenches the arm shaking her in a death grip until she realizes there’s nothing to be scared of.
“Give me a heart attack, why don’t you? Oh wait, you already did.” She glares at Maiken and stands up.
He just grins “You just weren’t waking up. You could sleep through a tornado. I take that back, I bet you could sleep in a tornado.”
She rolls her eyes and gathers her things, knowing perfectly well why she was woken up. She felt a bit weird because she had slept through the rest of yesterday and all last night, but at least she was well-rested. She sees him watching her out of the corner of her eye and a shiver goes through her.
His grin turns into a smirk. “There it is. You always got shivers when someone watched you.”
She scowls, hating how he knows just about everything about her. If only she could scrub his mind clean. Just as she’s about to say something, probably not very nice, Fenrir enters from the mouth of the cave. He’s carrying a bag full of food and Edith wonders for a second where he found everything.
He glances at the two of them and then looks back outside. “You two ready to go? Or do you want to keep flirting?”
Edith sometimes hated being blonde and pale. One of the reasons is the blushing. It’s not just a cute little dust, no no, it’s a full-body blush. Tomato red. Even her hairline turns pink.
Her scowl deepens and Maiken laughs and slings his arm around her shoulders. “Yeah, we’re an item. What about it?” His fingers play with her hair and she shrugs his arm off.
“We most definitely are not.” She says, giving him a cold stare. She couldn’t help the butterflies in her stomach and wills them to shrivel up and die.
“Whatever you say, kitten, whatever you say.” He winks and she rolls her eyes.
“I would like to murder my grandmother today, thank you.” The words felt weird in her mouth but she swallows the pain and leaves the cave. From here it would be about a few hours' walk without any stops, detours, or distractions.
They both follow her like she’s the alpha now and she switches her basket to the other hand. She was clenching it tightly and she loosens her grip. The grass was wet from the rain a few days ago. It seemed a bit strange to her so she figured it must have rained some more while she was asleep.
She starts walking with the two werewolves in tow, silently fuming from the conversation moments earlier. What had caused the sudden change of attitude for Maiken? It could possibly be how he’s dealing with the loss of his pack. How could she have forgotten?
She slows her pace so he can catch up and they can walk side by side. “I’m sorry for being so snappy.” She says.
He glances at her, his expression a mix of surprise and amusement. “It’s all good, kitten.”
She frowns at the nickname, he already said it twice. That probably meant he was sticking with it and she sighs. There could be worse things to be called.
They walk in sync for a bit longer and she watches the trees as they walk by them. As they start getting deeper into the woods, slash marks start appearing on the bark. Deeper so, the marks keep getting deeper and more frequent. She frowns for it wasn’t made by something with four or three claws but six. Some of the marks were bloody, too. Like it was going for someone and accidentally got the tree.
Edith groups Maiken’s arm and the air gets chillier and chillier. A violent shiver goes through her and her hair stands on end. Fenrir and Maiken both growl but it’s drowned out by a high-pitched scream that makes her blood run cold.
