The newest chapter of the Elantra Pirates is done and I think this’ll be a good time to explore how I came up with this one.
The concept of a bunch of pirates exploring the world they’re in is nothing new and suspiciously similar to One Piece, I get the comparison a lot. But that’s where I got the idea from.
I got the idea from a Warhammer 40k campaign me and my family did, where we were a bunch of dark elves on a pirate ship and that was so fun and good that I adapted it into the story we have today.
The main storyline that starts the story was almost ripped directly from the campaign and also the rat factory arc, but everything after that is all by me, expanding on the world I set up so far.
The characters however, are entirely different than they were from the campaign.
Yunga Elantra was created first out of all of them. She always had that power of incredible speed, but I also wanted her not to solve every problem with her power. That’s why I made her get an injury in her leg so she couldn’t use as much or even if she could, come at the cost of her not being able to land and crash into walls. Now at this point in the story, I have many big plans for her character in the future and her power, just you wait.
Hillanter Forecka’linser was the second character created. I wanted a really tough guy and aggressive character to be a part of the crew. He was originally a human, but when writing I changed his race to be a Joonkel. Originally, Purk’s were the first race created and the Joonkels followed after them. I plan on having more races, but at this point of the story they would have to be relatively small or not that abundant like the Purks and Joonkels.
Zunci Hermich was the third one I came up with. She’s very energetic and honestly my favorite out of all of them for me to write. I originally had her planned to be more relaxed but I thought it would be more fun for her to be more playful. Her backstory changed drastically, she originally was going to be a homeless orphan but then I realized that it was too similar to Shug’s and honestly came out way better in my opinion.
Shug Xilenth was the fourth character I came up with. He was always just like a regular human with no special talents like everyone else in the crew and I feel like it balances everything out. It’s nice to have a normal guy who is not that powerful but helpful at the very least. He wasn’t always planned to be a part of Yunga’s backstory, but I thought it would be more interesting if he was. Having more of a personal connection with the main character is always something I enjoy and plan to explore that more later.
Shanta Afritz was one of the last characters I came up with. I thought having a mage in the group was very necessary to have in the main cast and introduce the audience to the magic of the universe. She barely changed from concept to actual character. This section may seem short, but I’m saving her true character for later.
Brentha Velantriff was the last character that was for the main cast I created. She was always a shy character and was always destined to be a princess, so we have a dynamic class balance throughout the whole party. She is my second favorite character for some reason, I don't know why but I love every scene she’s in.
Drinter Velantriff was always the main villain from the beginning, I don’t want to give much away without spoiling future arcs but I promise he’ll come back.
Uff Antrant was a character I always wanted to do a huge arc with, just like with Drinter which will happen after the current one right now. I think he’s the most interesting villain I’ve written so far.
Jinlin Lofter was a character that was used over from another series I was writing but canceled. Only the name was used, his character completely changed into a more cynical and smart person than he once was. I have many plans for him in the future, and I wish I can talk more about him but I can’t without spoiling future events.
That is all for now but I will make a part two to this once I get more of the story out, I feel like it would be the same with all of my other works as well.
