Chapter 1: Arriving at Nevermore
“Aren’t you excited!”
My twin sister Enid bounced up and down in her seat. I sighed, putting my head in my hands.
“What’s wrong?” Enid asked me intently.
“Nevermore.” I replied angrily.
Ever since me and Enid were 10, our mother had known what high school we had to attend. Enid had started to have her claws come out at times, and I had already wolfed out.
So Nevermore, the place for outcasts, was where me and Enid belonged. It was huge hit to my reputation. Ever since it was revealed that I would go to “weirdo” school, kids had teased me for months.
The last few weeks of eighth grade had been absolute torture.
Enid didn’t seem to mind. Since I seemed the most upset about Nevermore, kids thought it would funnier to bully me.
“Aww hun you’re gonna be fine. Nevermore is perfect for you two! That’s where you two will finally belong! And maybe Enid will wolf out!” Mom blurted at my snarky remark.
Enid’s huge smile faded a little. “Mom! Don’t talk about that.” Enid said sourly.
“You’re one to talk Enid. You at least are enjoying the fact that you’re a weirdo kid.” I spat distastefully.
“We’re not weirdos! There are all those kids that are like us. That’s why we are attending Nevermore. To meet people like us.” Enid said reassuringly.
I looked away from her and out the window. We were approaching the school, kids were outside, talking. There were some werewolves, playing around in the grasses. I scoffed. They were acting like dogs. Werewolves aren’t dogs.
Me and Enid stepped out of the car, while our father went to the trunk of the car to take out our suitcases. He handed Enid a large rainbow suitcase and backpack. Then, he handed me my black duffel bag and my gray backpack. Even though me and Enid were twins, we were complete opposites. Enid loved everything pink and rainbow and colorful. Meanwhile, I preferred darker shades. I wasn’t goth or anything, just not into unicorns and rainbows.
Me and my family walked up the stairs and through the double doors which led us into a huge room.
The room was filled with students, some like me and Enid, about 14, some 17. Most kids were with they’re parents, waiting outside the office to get registered. I took a deep breath, biting my lip. Some kids looked like me, nervous, other looked like they were having the time of their lives.
The line moved quickly, so soon me and Enid were inside the office, looking at our new principal. She was very tall with platinum blonde hair and red lips which curved into a smile.
“Welcome to Nevermore! Name?” She asked us.
Enid replied, “Enid and Ethel Sinclair.” She smiled.
“Ah! I see you two right here.” She smiled at us and said “You’re good to go. Enid, you will be staying alone. Unfortunately, the number of dorms and students are uneven.”
She gave Enid a sad smile. “Aw man!” Enid stamped her foot and smiled sadly at Principal Weems. “It’s okay, I’ll make new friends elsewhere.” Enid said.
“No, it’s okay. I’ll go alone, I don’t mind.” I said quickly.
“I’m afraid that can’t be arranged.” Principal Weems told me. “You will be staying with Bianca Barclay, room 182, Enid you will be staying in room 183, right next to each other!” Principal Weems smiled.
“Alright, well you should go settle in…next!” She called out to the next group. “Thank you Mrs. Weems.” Mother said and gave Principal Weems a cheesy smile.
We exited the room and out into the big room with all the kids. “Alright, well me and dad must be leaving.” Mother said giving me and Enid a quick hug.
Dad hugged both of us too, longer hugs though. As they left the entry hall, we headed up the stairs toward the dorms.
