She used to think of home often. When she sat around the dying embers of the fire she built many hours previous, thoughts of home and loved ones would come back to haunt her.
Her only company was Nature but Nature did not pay any heed to the single human life living its days and nights in the forest, alone and frightened. Loneliness crept into the woman's bones until it began to take a permanent place in her heart and soul.
It was her fault after all; she had wandered too far off the trail and now she could never return home.
Things she took for granted were now gone and sorely missed and things that held such importance in her life seemed frivolous in face of Mother Nature's fury. Her main focus now was survival. Nothing more.
Winter had come the month before and life had become even more of a struggle. The woman wondered how animals were able to endure such torment year after year when she found the traps she had set were empty yet again or woke up shivering.
The woman had made spears and tried to make arrows and a bow but failed. She needed them to hunt and fend off predators like wolves. Wolves were always close; near starving as they were, waiting for a moment of weakness so they could strike the woman down. She couldn't make them go away.
She steadily began to have trouble recalling the faces of loved ones as time wore on until she had no choice but to accept her fate of being lost in the woods for the rest of her days. She would never return home.
How quickly her sense of superiority, that all too human sense of being above Nature, vanished from her mind. When she narrowly escaped a black bear, it was then the woman realized that she was not invincible against the natural world.
The woman thought she could find civilization once again but she had gotten herself in deeper trouble by getting lost and gave up all hope of being found.
Learning to survive on her own was the hardest challenge the woman had ever faced. She nearly died of starvation and thirst because she was too frightened to eat any of the vegetation or drink the water. It was only out of desperation did she take the risk of consuming any plants or drinking water from the rivers and streams at all.904Please respect copyright.PENANA48qNLTGYq8
I am no longer a civilized person. She thought. I have ceased to be human. I am now an animal.
The woman stared off into the horizon as snow fell gently all around her. A wolf howled near by. Fear shot up the woman's spine at the sound. She slung her belongings on her back and strode forward.
I need to survive. She thought. No wolf is going to destroy that!
The woman had become bold and she no longer feared Nature as much as she used to. The wolves were the only thing she feared.
A lone wolf appeared out of the trees before her. It amber eyes staring straight into her soul. No doubt the rest of the pack was close by. 904Please respect copyright.PENANAGcM67W2TEJ
The woman took her spear off her back and held it firmly in her hands. She crouched low to the ground and stared the animal in the eye. No fear. She thought. Have no fear. Just kill the awful creature.
The wolf snarled and sprang forward. The woman tensed, arm raised, ready to strike. In an instant she threw the spear as hard as she could.904Please respect copyright.PENANAAZ4m00JkjG
Then blood stained the snow a crimson red.
