The barn was blood red. Hay adorned the roof and inside were cows and hay and tools. They had just gone inside, and she was safe to go. She needed to run fast if she wanted to make it.
“Mia?”
The ripping of the chainsaw almost deafened her voice. She looked nervous, her head down in fear, tears pooling quietly in her eyes. “What?” She says.
”You need to leave. Now.”
She looked at me, hurt. Her bright blue eyes twinkled in the moonlight. “Why?”
”You need to go. They WILL kill you if you stay here.”
I stared at the couple. They had left by now and were getting closer. They were about 10 metres in front of us, but still didn’t see or hear us in the bush. If Mia stayed here for much longer, they would certainly find us.
She turned hastily as if to go, and pivoted to look back at me. “What about you?”
I felt a pang of shame. I didn’t want her to leave, but I knew she would be safer.
“It’s you they’re after. I’ll be fine.” Even I wasn’t sure; they seemed like they would kill anyone to get to her. It didn’t matter. As long as Mia lived a happy life afterwards, I wouldn’t mind dying for her.
She smiled, her pearly teeth giving me a dopamine rush, and wrapped her arms around me, a final hug before she disappeared forever. Her trainers bounced quietly on the dirt as she sprinted away from the barn. Away from her old life.
The ripping of the chainsaw grew louder. I stayed deathly still and braced myself, preparing to run the second they saw me.
”MIA!” A woman’s voice screamed. “GET HERE NOW!”
They ran through the path she did and I bit my cheek. If they caught up to her, she was going to die. I had to do something. I stomped on a twig and they turned immediately towards me, like wild predators in a nature documentary.
“Mia?” they whispered. As they walked towards me, I knew what I had to do.
I took off like a sprinter, throwing myself through the thick forest. “RUN!!!” I screamed, hoping that Mia heard me. I heard a cry for help and followed the noise, the parents unfortunately close behind.
There she was. Her soft blonde hair waved in the breeze and she disappeared into the shadows, free from the terrifying dictatorship of her parents. I breathed a sigh of relief, and the pure terror I had felt before was evaporating away.
That was until I turned around.
“WHERE THE HELL IS MY DAUGHTER?” Her dad screeched into my face. I flinched but tried to keep cool. Mia’s mom was clutching the chainsaw in one hand; the other was clenched into a fist. It was definitely hard to keep my cool.
”I don’t, I don’t know.”
”Why are you here then, sweetie?” The woman bared her teeth at me and I gulped. I knew that one wrong move would put my skull through the blades of that chainsaw.
“I’m…I’m lost.”
Her face turned into one of sarcastic compassion. “Really? At 1am?”
I nodded, my heart pumping in my chest. “Goodbye.” I ran away immediately, my hair shaking violently in the cold wind. They still let me go, even though they didn’t believe me for a second.
They kept looking for Mia and I managed to get out. Safe. I prayed Mia was too.

St. Sofia’s Student Missing, Presumed Dead
Mia Gray, a 14 year old student at St. Sofia’s Catholic School For Girls has been missing for almost a month and is now presumed dead by the police.
We are still holding searches and are hoping that people can help out at home. Mia is described to be 5 feet, 3 inches, with long blonde hair and blue eyes.
If anybody discovers Mia, dead or alive, a reward of $250 will be given to them. Mia’s family are very worried for her. Unfortunately, both her mother and father have refused to share anything with the press.
At this time, police have reasoning to assume that Mia is dead. However, she could still be alive and well, and the police are looking for concrete evidence to support their belief.

That was 10 years ago today. Everyone thinks she’s dead. I miss her.
But I saw her last, I know she’s alive. She has to be. Her parents didn’t get to her, and she got away.
They moved to Mexico 5 months after she went missing and still want nothing to do with this town. Ironic, seeing as they were the ones trying to kill her.
I sat quietly on the bench outside my house. Well, it’s not really my house. Two girls from uni asked me to be my roommate after we all graduated and I agreed. It’s a nice little cottage with flowers and round windows and my favourite little bench in the front yard.
I decided to read a book. Mia had recommended me hundreds when we were together and I bought every single one of them with my pay checks. I opened the story and started reading. It had one of the same fake covers that they did all those years ago, back when she had to hide what she read.
The pages are smooth and I swing my legs slowly to the melody of the words. I sometimes read for hours at an end, it was the only thing letting me rest from the tortures of life.
The postman walked gently up to my house and slotted a letter into the mailbox. Bills this early? I go up to find out what it is. It’s a plain letter, with just my address. I opened it up and skim through the handwriting. There was a sense of familiarity with each word, but I didn’t read it all. I wanted to know who sent it first.
My eyes fixate on the last three words and I freeze.
‘From your Mia.’
